Never thought of the tank as tiny, but I don't do any long haul driving or racing.
The fuel tanks I have seen are aftermarket racing fuel cell types - bigger, boxier, and would no doubt change the look/room under the front hood. I see these advertised in Excellence frequently.
The 997 tank is also a gallon larger than the 996TT (17.7 gal vs. 16.6 gal).

Back in the old 'air cooled' days, you could get a 92 litre tank (compared to the 72 litre) in the 964 (I've got one in my 964 Euro Cup) and 993's as a factory option: http://www.carnewal-europe.com/cpx_p93019.htm
Don't know if PAG is or does offer this as an option (likely European).
Perhaps Gert could find out if you asked him.
