Default Turbo Lag

Hae been curious to see how the variable thrust is working out. Are you still experiencing the usual turbo lag with the 997S? For years I drove a 930-based turbo and simply factored it into my driving style and managed to do alright. Have been hoping that they resolved this but a quick search for "turbo lag" seems to show that they haven't solved that problem still. Is the spool up time reduced? Comments?

Hey Edgy,

I drove a 930 for 17 years, and I too learned how to anticipate the lag. When the car was new, damn that lag was fun! I had the usual mods done about 5 years ago and with a bigger, better turbo the lag was reduced, but still there and had to be respected. After "one mississippi, two missis..." all hell broke loose.

The new car has much less noticable lag, but still there. I think the torque and the torque range makes the power/speed/acceleration curve (whatever you want to call it) much more linear and not as much like a burst of "go". It takes a little getting used to, but still alot of fun. And I'm still in the break-in mode with only 1400 m.

Turbo lag is definitely present. I haven't driven a 997 w/sport chrono (which is what I have on order). The lag in the 997 w/o sport chrono seemed close to that of my two 996's. I have been told that the cars with sport chrono have significantly less lag...won't know until mine arrives in 2 months.

I also found that the 997 w/o sport chrono didn't feel as fast as my 996 w/chip. Close, but, the 996 still definitely pulled harder. However, interms of speed/pull the base 997 is a significant improvement over the base 996 - hence, once you chip the 997, it should turn into a league of its own!

Yes, from the factory it has noticeable lag. However the EGTS creep near 950C and the back pressure is 8-10 lbs. This kills spool up. The two best and biggest changes you can make to the car is a program and exhaust. There is no comparison. The car makes full TQ 1200 ROM sooner than any GT2 or K24/k16 base car.

I was not as happy with the car as I thought I would be until we finally developed the software and hardware to match it. Night and day. I absolutely love the car now!

Stephen, what software & exhaust package do you suggest I put on the 997tt? Do you sell both?

Boy, I must be getting old. The so-called "Turbo-lag" on the 996TTX50 I owned and the 997 Turbo is nothing compared to the older Porsche Turbos. In fact, what was mentioned by others is true: (1) It was a thrilling experience when the boost kicked in, and (2) During racing, one just had to learn how to drive the 930 or 935 to account for the lag. In fact in some cases, it could be used as an advantage compared to the competition.

As far as aftermarket exhaust systems for the new 997 Turbo, I personally would wait until I can get enough feedback from the user community before committing to a particular solution. This advice also comes from the sages.

I am more saguine about the GIAC software tuning solution, except that apparently now we have to send it in for flashing, and if we were taking the car back to the dealer for repairs or something, again have to send it back to reinstate, unlike the good old days when we could do it all ourselves.
