Tragic. I am sure we have all gone a bit too fast while showing the car to a friend. Just terrible.

Compared to what most of us are used to, these turbos are extremely poweful and capable of very high speed nearly instanteously.....something all of us must be aware of and cautious about as we drive these magnificent machines.

as I read in a recent review "It's one of those cars with so much power that you can't just floor it"

wonder if he still had the summer tires on the 19s...
the low temps here in the NE make PS2s very slippery (and at a lower limit)

my winter tires stick SO MUCH better than the summers in the cold temps

in any case, I think I'll be driving a bit slower today...

Man, it's another reminder that our lives are also just not only our own. The driver left his daughter's birthday party when this happened.

Be safe all....

"State police at Greensburg said last night the men were traveling south on Arona Road at a high rate of speed when the car went off the west berm of the road and hit several trees a half-mile from Svetz's home"

Definitely not a tragedy, more like an avoidable accident, at least based on what was reported.

Be nice to see the final report. Could just be a case of drinking too much and losing focus. If non-gripping tires part of it....just makes everything worse.

Here we go again.....

A woman is killed when 12,000# of concrete ceiling (Big Dig tunnel in Boston) falls onto her car, killing her while driving to Logan Airport to pick up her family....that could be called a tragedy.

A kid, riding their bike, is killed by a drunk driver.....that could be called a tragedy.

Based on what was written so far, this was NOT a tragedy.
(Neither was the 18yr old girl who died in a Cabriolet crash (100mph, across lanes, ending up against a toll booth wall)

It was simply a person, exercising free will and poor judgement, who apparently made one or more mistakes (speeding for instance, lack of proper environment (race track), lack of proper safety equipment (rollcage, harnesses, helmets, H&N restraint) and ultimately paid a very high price.

There is nothing to tell his wife and daughter. They will ask why, but the only person who can answer that is now dead.

If it makes you feel better for having sympathy for every single case of death/loss, then that's fine....a bit misguided and misplaced, but it's a personal choice.

Unhappy

I'm with you ITC, the word TRAGEDY is often misused...no denying the shock and sadness the family must face but this was probably avoidable.
Re Tires most people think that as long as the roads are dry you can use the high performance tires in cold temps, we know this to be false. Prob a combination of things, but the 997tt is seriously quick and requires maximum attention and respect.

Wouldn't you guesstimate over 120mph for that damage? That is an unfortunate graphic demonstration of high speed and tree-lined roads, and the primary reason I'm critical of boasts of high speeds attained on open roads.
I sympathize with the families of the departed. The passenger death is tragic. Had the driver survived, there would likely have been a reckless homicide accusation. Obviously, that's an assumption, since we don't know if a deer crossed the road, or the driver suffered a loss of consciousness from seizure or heart attack. Still, the damage suggests a very high speed. Wouldn't surprise me if it was 150, and would surprise me if less than 100. AS
