SL55 AMG vs 997 Turbo
I own a 2001 Vette and a 2001 Carrera. Looking to trade one car in a year to either SL55 AMG or the 997 Turbo.
For you 997 TT owners, have you considered SL55 AMG?

I drive in the city a lot and find the 997TT better at putting the power on the pavement. SL55 involves too much traction control interference which is not fun. The brakes on the 997TT also makes the car much more fun than the brake by wire on the SL.
Depends though, if you want a convertible, the SL55 is hard to beat.

1. Convertible - not a big fan
2. Heavy
3. Model change coming soon, SL63?
4. Ordinary looking and common
5. Boring
Although my E55 is for sale right now, I prefer the sedan...

The SL is quite a car...but very different from the 997TT.
The SL is a more conservative, elegant, sophisticated choice. The TT is a super car with super performance.
If my grandfather asked me the same question....I would recommend him to buy the SL. If my brother asked me the same question....I would recommend him to buy the TT.

SL55 AMG vs 997 Turbo
My 997 TT is due in November. I'm trading in my SL55. It's too heavy, numb and boring. Great build quality and engine but driving dynamics are compromised by electronic interfaces and interventions.

I have both. My SL55 also has Kleeman K2 for 585hp/628tq. Traction is an issue but the sound is not. The 997TT is still faster from a 45 mph roll to 140 where we quit. The 997TT in comfort mode rides every bit as good as the SL55 in sport mode so I would not consider the ride comfort as an issue. I'm not so sure you will see a 63 motor in the Benz flagship anytime soon either, it just is not the same as a sc/fi engine. The SL55 for luxury, elegance and the ultimate in a GT cruiser(with good boot space too), and the 997TT for an everyday supercar. Very different cars and both enjoyabe in their own ways.

When you think about this, it sounds logical. For example, my Dad likes the P, but doens't enjoy the bumpy ride so he would take the SL anytime. I will probably get an SL when I'm over 40 as a cruiser and as my 4th car. I want my car to be fun, and P delivers it for sure.
40's are still fun time, too.

Well even for me, I ended up getting the 01 Vette and 01 Porsche 911 after getting bored of the 91 Mercedes 300E which I drove since college for about 12 years. Still kept 300E and at 189,000 miles, it's my choice for long-distance commuter, but there is no fun factor.
I don't have the 997TT yet, but I didn't know those need to be ordered. Is that the usual process for special cars like the TT?

I would want both cars in a perfect world. The SL55 is great fun with the top down and the 997Turbo well is a perfect car all around period. I will be dreaming of both in my sleep tonight
