Still Special?
One thing that makes my old car special is that it can complete with much newer cars!
Drivetribe just scattered my pride. The Stig, his 2012 TT vs the 992 Turbo S
Should I sell? Am I missing the point?

watched that the other night and wasn't bothered by it one bit.. it actually made me feel better because I was getting dropped by a 992 at High Plains Raceway this summer! Newer car, professional driver, and PDK... who woulda thunk? Didn't buy mine to be a track lord, it's the perfect analog street car and plenty capable for light track use. Still smokes most things out there

They’re special for one big reason they’re is not a lot made and they’re the last real analog Porsches

Wait, did the OP really think (before watching the video) that a stock manual transmission 997 turbo of any vintage could keep up with a current gen Turbo of any vintage? Time moves on and if a company is doing it right, the subsequent generations of a product are objectively better than earlier versions. That's not to say there are good reasons to prefer older versions of something, particularly 911s. BTW, I really liked that video. At this point in time, I never see 997s of any generation at track days.

Not surprised by the outcome, but 11.6 seconds faster on a 2.4 mile lap is shocking!
I had a ride in a friends 992 Turbo on a benchmark hill climb and was completely stunned by the grip and shove.
While I could match him in his heavily modded 991.2, I'm positive no way I could with his 992
Of course my car is still more special . . .

Wasn’t the 997 a stick which is slower especially around a track
but not less enjoyable to drive

Doesn't really matter much, but heres the confirmation of what you remember. Although they did test the 997.2tt.
e93 3:05.6
997.1tt 3:05.8
They did test the
997.2tts it ran 2:57.5
the 2011 .2tts wasn't beaten by any M car until the 2018 M5 2:55.2 and not by an M3 until the 2022 m3 competition 2:53.5
The 992tts ran 2:42.5 at VIR.

If you just care about laptimes tho you can grab a zl1 that ran a 2:50.1 for like $30k and beat on 991 gt3's. In theory a 2023 z06 at $110k, not sure they sell for msrp tho, runs a 2:38.6 and beats pretty much everything.

Was a big PCA event at Laguna couple months ago, and it wasn’t lack of 997s (a few) but lack of turbos (only 2 or 3 across all generations) that surprised me vs a few years ago. Lots of GT3s now. People dismiss them as “not great track cars”, but I’ve always had a blast with my turbos and keep up with even the newer GT cars just fine.

It definitely seems like over the last 10 years or so, people have started thinking "GT3 or nothing" when it comes to 911s, like it's the only choice for the truly discerning car enthusiast. I guess the turbo-fication of every other car for sale might have something to do with it (911 Turbos feel less unique?) but I know I, for one, appreciate the thrust and torque of forced induction. I suppose in the 991.2 and 992 generations the Turbo model is even less glamorous since every 911 has turbochargers, too, not to mention faster than you can ever use on the street.
