GIAC vs APR vs COBB Stage I tunes
For 997.1 turbo 6 speed in CA with 91 octane gas and only intake and exhaust mods which tune is the real deal?

Did you get the Arctic Silver one? I have a Cobb because I thought it was cool that you can datalog, show info in gauge format through the OBD2 connector, and change the tune on the fly(valet/stock/etc). Also, smart people can provide custom tunes through it. Good luck and congrats!

APR guys are my friends, nevertheless they and GIAC are basically irrelevant at this point in this market. Kevin or Cobb would be the way forward. There is zero reason to settle for a canned tune when there are several, very good custom options out there that will be specifically tailored to your car with the datalogging needed to make sure all is well.

+1 for Kevin at UMW.
Several things to consider when tuning with the foremost being support. Tuners like APR of GIAC are constantly moving from new platform to new platform seldom supporting older stuff outside of canned tunes. Cobb offers flexibility and support of someone like Sam which depending on your plans for the car might do perfectly.
Personally for me it was Kevin as his support and knowledge when chasing down issues with these 996/997 turbos is fantastic. Markski and Sam also support the community very much as well so talk to each and figure out your plans.
Have UMW on both my 996 and 997 and am a very happy customer as someone who has messed with everything from MRC, to Revo to EPL to Eurodyne to APR and GIAC and standalone ecus. Each have their strengths and some have some alarming weaknesses depending on the application as no size fits all.

We've had customers happy for over a decade on our 997 tune. Give it a shot. I think you'll love it too, and if you don't, you have 30 days to return it for a refund.

I might be mostly unbiased, because I don’t have a tune. I’ve had (unpaid) help from both Kevin and Sam btw. Meaning I asked a thousand questions and didn’t buy anything. I’d recommend both equally, both were patient, both were understanding.
Kevin knows what he’s doing, keeps to himself, less promotion and more knowledgeable answers. He supports this community extremely well. Has his own tuning product and well connected with us (forum members + do-it ourselves people).
Sam seems to have a larger business and works social media well. He seems to be as attentive when asked questions directly, however, he has a (big?) business to run. Will sell you a COBB and tune it for you, so that’s a plus.
Now let’s talk about others I’ve been exposed to since 2016:
COBB = Buy, install canned tune and go.
The rest = Well, I don’t know. They seem to promote and disappear.

Happy New Year 2020...
Please feel free to reach out to me for Tuning/high speed datalogger and whatever you might need this year...
FYI, I'm deep in the machine shop building a better hydraulic wing assy (improved factory design) for all of us 997TT and 996TT owners…. Broaching a mirror finish in 17-4 stainless (smile) Fully machined cylinder vs extruded tubing!
