Mod my 997TT or buy a 991TTS?
I bought my 997.1TT (2007) in 2009 when it had 2,517 miles on the odometer, was for all intents and purposes a brand new car, not even a hint of a smudge on the car. I live in Northern California, but found the perfect car with all the exact options I wanted in New York, so I flew to New York, picked up the car, and had a fantastic cross-country trip with my "new" car. I took my time, drove a lot of back roads (especially through Wyoming and Utah so I could really open her up), and visited friends along the way. It was an epic trip.
Needless to say, I love my Turbo - 6 speed manual, Sport Chrono, PCCBs, adaptive sport seats, just perfect. Well, the Bose audio system really sucks. I love the car today as much as the first day I picked it up. The car has been nearly flawless for nine years, the only item I've had to replace was the clutch master slave, not a big deal. Car now has 40,000 miles.
But after nine years, I have been seriously thinking about buying a 991TTS. However, there is quite a delta between what I will be able to sell my 997.1TT for and the price of either a 991.1TTS or 991.2 TTS.
So now I'm really starting to think - why don't I just keep my 997.1TT and do some nice upgrades? I'm thinking a tune (just software, no engine mods), suspension upgrade, new exhaust, forged wheels, and a killer audio system.
I realize these upgrades won't be cheap, but I believe still significantly less than selling my car and buying a 991TTS. I'm not really doing this because I can't afford a 991TTS (not an issue), but I think I might even end up with a nicer and more satisfying car (for me - kind of personalized with tasteful upgrades) than buying a stock 991TTS.
I've made plenty of foolish car purchase decisions in my life, and I want to try to make a good decision this time, so that I end up being happy with my choice and don't have any regrets.
I've decided I won't make a decision until 2019 so that I give myself plenty of time to really think about this and consider all the pros and cons of my options.
Any thoughts from those of you who have undergone a similar process?
Thanks,
Andy

I assume you own the 997 outright, I’d just keep the 997 and not bother with a 200k depreciating assets. Conversely, a new 991tts is a pretty sweet ride. But you know you’ll eventually be modding it too...bird in the hand, keep the 997.

I agree with the above because at the end of the day its not only the delta between selling and purchasing since 997 has seen most of its depreciation which makes it cheaper to keep. The mods will make it more special and enjoyable to you, do you think the 991 TT will be six figures more enjoyable? I doubt it.

I agree with most here. Especially about the first mod you need to purchase. I just installed one on my 997TTS and made with video of the install.
Took 8-10 mins tops. I love how the car drives now with this mod.

Just stay in a 997 and be part of the best watercooled 911 of all time.
With the direction of porsche, the moment they released the 991, its about bigger, faster and bigger again.
A 997 has a balance of size and modern comforts that if taken cared for, will last forever.
Sell it at rennlist then buy a 997TTS.

I have gone through this process, and I bought a 991.1 TTS. I have no regrets. I’d do it again. My 997.1 TT was a wonderful car. For me, the 991.1 TTS is better in every way. I think you need to decide on your priorities. For some people, the 997 is a better choice. For some people, the 991 is a better choice. There’s no wrong answer.

When money really truly honestly isn’t a factor you’d just have the 991 and not even really think about a good or bad decision. Think about it. Stick with the 997 brother awesome car and you already love it.

Keep your 997.1. I upgraded the PCM in my former 997.1 with a Pioneer Avic system that made a huge difference, a tune which helped a lot, GT2 RS wheels with Michelin PSS's, backup camera and sensors, BMC filter, Fabspeed exhaust tips, and a few other updates. It was a great car and I wasn't looking to sell until I found an 09 cab for a great price that I couldn't pass up. IMO, the 997.1's and .2's are future Porsche classic super stars, especially with a manual which the 991's don't have.

Andy,
I'd buy an Accessport and a DSC box and drive it until you make your final decision next year. If that doesn't do it for you, you can easily sell them when you sell your car. If that pushes you to keep the car, then you can go ahead with the more expensive mods that would be harder to get your money out of.

It depends, if you like a standard transmission, then your decision is easy. If money is no object and you don't need a manual, your decision is easy.
I agree with the sound system issue, fortunately all I added was a Tranzit Blu to hook up my Ipod and I am good to go since all I really want to hear is the engine anyway.
Like has been said, a few upgrades on the car and you have one well sorted, and well desired vehicle. This is even more true if you are like me and detest the fact that even though they are superior in performance, I want the decision about manual or automatic transmissions to be made by me. I like my V10 Audi S6, but damn I miss a clutch (it is the only car in the family without one).

I have both if you have any specific questions. They are vastly different cars. The 991 is a much better day to day car and has capabilities out of the box that’ll run circles around even modded 997TTs: mine ran a 10.54 @ 131 the one and only time I ran it down the track. It is also much, much more reliable. That said, a bit of the theatre is lost. It is so freakin good at everything that you sort of forget quickly at how well it does everything you throw at it. Definitely needs an exhaust to have the correct sound. I don’t think you can go wrong with either car. The 997 has much more of an old school Porsche feel to it.
