Default Exhaust Tip Residue

New 997.2 Turbo S owner. Curious if other 997.2 DFI TTS owners see their exhaust tips get this buildup. Easy to clean up after a drive but you can see some black deposits after a long drive, especially if you rev the motor.

Older dry residue. Need abrasive to remove it.

Yes, I get the same thing on my 997.2TT. I purchased mine CPO and the tips had probably not been cleaned in the past by the previous owner. I spent several hours gently removing the buildup without damaging the finish on the tips. I used several products and had the best results with Bar Keepers Friend liquid cleaner. It's non-abrasive and broke down the buildup pretty well. I clean the tips every couple of weeks now.

Thanks for the recommendation on what to use to clean the tips. I have only driven the car about 150miles but have wiped down the tips a couple times already. I was thinking maybe if the car was driven real easy for a while by the previous owner that revving the motor would blow old moisture with oil out of the exhaust and onto the tips

Pretty common. I use Simple Green and whipe them off quite frequently too. Bothers me to see them dirty after a couple of aggressive driving.

I just bought a 2010 Turbo and seem to have to clean the tips regularly too. I’m not sure if this is normal but tomorrow I am taking the car to Kelly Moss in Fitchburg WI and will hopefully find out. I will let you know what they say.

My is a 997.2 CS2 and according to other PCA members the soot buildups on the exhaust tips are quite normal. More pronounced is on the left exhaust for some reasons. My doesn't burn any oil and I even looked at the cylinder with a endoscope when I changed plugs and coil and the cylinders were scratch free and almost mirror like. Same with the plugs I pulled and they only show a slight greyish color. Its normal, nothing to worry about.

That would be great. Have you been to Kelly Moss before? I’m thinking about driving over there to check them out.

Glad to hear I’m not the only one. Seems unusual for a high performance motor. Going back to my years of experience a tailpipe that did this was an indication of either too rich and unburned fuel, or some other moisture getting into the exhaust unburned such as coolant or oil blowing by the turbo seals.

My 997.2 TT does the same thing, solution for me was powder coating tips black.

scanning this thread and it comes to mind that I don't recall seeing a .2 TT w/o sooty tips. Especially at dealerships over the years...totally normal output.

My 997.2 Turbo S also does the same thing. I have to wipe them down after every couple of drives.
