Seems crazy that the report could be that wrong, if it truly hasn't been over-revved. It's too bad the report only gives operating hours of the event rather than odometer; makes it tough to tell exactly when it happened. I'm wondering if a mechanic might have done it while it was in for servicing.

The prevalence of 997s with over revs makes me think a pretty sizeable chunk of aircooleds would have them, too.

What's funny to me is the guys who buy into the Mezger Mystique for its race-bred heritage and legendary durability but then run for the hills if they find out the car was actually driven around redline.
Lol so true. And never has one surfaced of proof that an over rev destroy an Mezger engine. Some of these guys focused too much on fake news.

I'd be throughly disappointed if my DME had logged over-revs that did not actually occur, at that point I'd question all over-rev data on any Porsche. Unfortunately so much emphasis, for the nicer examples, is placed on this data that it is almost impossible to sell a car for comparable price for similar build and desirability with little to no over-revs.

To OP, did you have any over-rev data from before you owned the vehicle? Obviously the DME states that these occurred during your ownership, or the 15K miles drive since purchase, but it'd be interesting to see a comparison.

Hilarius! This is so true, it’s completely meaningless to me.

I'd like to see the DME on a purely track driven beast. Anyone seen a savage DME report? Seems like one would being bragging rights in certain circles.
range 1---21580

range 2---5762

range 3---2302

range 4---793

range 5---9

range 6---6

This is my DME report from over the summer when I was servicing the car I figured I would check it out.

I do not track the car but a group of us are into the "state highway track"

My car runs like a top, I could careless that it has range 6, hell I put them in there

Triplenet, have you ever had a high speed spin, on the track, with the clutch out? You can get (rare) over-revs from that situation too, since the rev-limiter does not protect the engine being spun backwards.

37,000 miles / 1,405 op hours = 26 ave mph (that's very low, you must do a ton of city stop & go driving)

1,405 - 1,288 = 117 hours since last range 6 event or about 117 x 26 = 3,042 miles ago

...and track days on occasion.

Triplenet, someone had mentioned a tune being a potential partial culprit, but I didn't see that you mentioned a tune. Do you have a tune?

track days for sure !!!! ... I was commenting on the 26 MPH average .... The car was originally owned by a Dr. and was his daily driver ... Thats probably the reason for the low average MPH ....

BTW - it had a tune - but was not happy with it so back to stock or slightly tuned ... That is absolutely why I assumed some range 4 ..:-)

The DME readout is useless to certain extent.

MY turbo had 99,999 for both range 1 and range 2. It maxed out according to tech when i had ~60k miles. I sold the car with 98k miles. Last drive with the car- i out ran a V10 Audi R8. Car did not blow up in those 38k miles after being maxed out on range 1/2. How about that for data ?

When flash one of these cars it messes with the preset ecu parameters for type 1-6 errors, hence mystery type 6 errors when a car doesn't even have a type 5. These reports are grossly over used, really their sole purpose is for porsche to deny warranty claims/cpo. I'm glad none of my air cooled cars ever had rev counters!

There also has to be a way of changing these numbers in the computer...kind of like turning back mileage
