DME - Not good news for me
 
Well , had a potential buyer do a PPI and DME .... PPI came back fine but check out the DME ...

Granted I do track the car on occasion - but have never missed a gear nor beat it up out there...

The DME results are a shocker to me.... Sent some oil samples out and will do a compression check ...
  • - Range 4 – 1368 @ 1323.400 operating hours
  • - Range 5 – 189 @ 1298.300 operating hours
  • - Range 6 – 14 @ 1288.500 operating hours

1405...... runs strong ... no issues ... hopefully oil and compression come back fine...

May just have to keep it for a while :-) .....

yes... Since it had 22k miles 3 years ago... now has 37k on clock...

There is absolutely no way I hit 9k rpm... I shift at most around 6 to 7k on the track and downshift sequentially thru the gears...

I expected a range 4.... the 5 & 6 are really odd ...

Is there a chance of errors due to a tune? No idea on this, but it seems possible. Readings register higher for some reason? Seems you'd remember a 9,000 rpm shift.

If those numbers are spurious (and I agree you should definitely remember a range 5/6 incident), then it's pretty alarming how unreliable a DME report can be. So many cars are branded a scarlet letter because of these reports.

Could a rev to 9K in neutral generate a range 6? You could do a compression test which you could then pre-emptively provide to buyers. It would also give you peace of mind if you decide to keep the car.

Tunes are notorious for f'ing up your DME report. If the car runs fine I wouldn't worry about it. The only downside for you is resale, I'd go thru the motions like youre doing to prove all is well then offer a small discount, ~5k or so. Last option is to just trade it in and let the dealer worry about it.

These rev reports seem to be a bunch of total BS to me. Case in point: I logged my range 4 ignitions with durametric, went out and did a data-logged pull to 6980 rpm, and then relogged my range 4s. They went up. A verified pull to less than 7k rpm resulted in increased ignitions in the 7400-7900 range which my car has never touched.

It would, but you can only get to range 6 by forcing it mechanically, like with a missed shift. (Or via computer glitch...) Revving in neutral should reach a rev limiter well below 9k.

And unfortunately, all the compression tests and Blackstone reports in the world won't convince some buyers that a car with range 4/5/6 revs isn't a beat up mule at death's door.

Thats about 80 hrs from the last overrev. Most likely that engine is alright.

Has anyone ever seen these reports actually true? Like the engine just sounds like a bag of nuts and bolts after a "high rev"?

These reports are blown way over the top IMO

I agree. Can you imagine if air cooled cars had DME info? If the engine is running strong and the leak down is good, what's the issue? These cars can take a lot more than most of us will ever put them through.

I'd like to see the DME on a purely track driven beast. Anyone seen a savage DME report? Seems like one would being bragging rights in certain circles.

I've seen tons and tons of cars with a bunch of 5s and 6s that still run strong and pass all relevant health checks, but strangely have never once heard of a TT breaking from old over revs. If your money shift breaks something, you tend to know it right away.

The prevalence of 997s with over revs makes me think a pretty sizeable chunk of aircooleds would have them, too.

What's funny to me is the guys who buy into the Mezger Mystique for its race-bred heritage and legendary durability but then run for the hills if they find out the car was actually driven around redline.
