Default Total911:997 vs 996

Had a chance to read it at Barnes , interesting but too short of a comparison. And comparing a Tip vs a manual is not a perfect comparison.

I need to drive a 996TT.

What was the gist of their conclusion?

Not the best comparison in that case then...

I think a 996 TT with an x50 package is a good buy. I may pick one up in the future when I fix my garage problem.

Kind of weird they did a 7TT Tip vs 6TT manual, I'm sure they could have had access to manual vs manual. I guess price parity was an important factor.

I think the spread between any 996 Turbo and 997 Turbo I'd want to own is closer to $20K than $10K....

But the spread between a tip/cab and a 6-sp/coupe is as much as $10K, so I guess their $10k number isn't too far off.

The last 996TTS I saw listed in Canada was listed for more than most 997TT. No offense to 996TT owners but I would never pay $85k for one...and I am one that likes the 996TT and wanted to add one to the collection before that came up in value.

After just picking up my 997TT and comparing it to my 996TT they are very much different cars from a driving experience. The refinement and fantastic road manners of the 997 stock vs the slightly lackluster stock 996 feel. The 996 with some suspension and power modifications is an animal in comparison to the 997. For road trips and generally cruising around I find myself really enjoying the 997, where as the 996 is an all or nothing affair of being fully present at all times. Granted comparing a stock car to a modified one is difficult, I am not sure if I will extensively modify the 997 when I have the 996 to scratch that itch.

The interior layout of the 997 is light years better in ergonomics and feel over the 996, the steering does leave something to be desired in it not as talkative as the 996, but this is a good thing in a fantastic GT car.

Are both manuals?

GT Porsche December 2017 magazine has a similar comparison but both are TIPs. They say the 997.1TT is worth £10k (~$U$13.5k) more than the 996TT because the VTG turbos, PTM, PASM make it more fun to drive but if you can't afford to spend the extra money then you won't miss all that much with the 996TT (saying it rides more comfortably due to 18" versus 19" tires plus suspension tuning).

The Total 911 article 10k price difference is also in £ and not U$.

Interesting commentary on 18" vs. 19" wheels and ride quality. My 996 was a C4S, and it shared many components (including suspension, wheel diameter, etc.) with the 996 turbo. When I upgraded to the 997, I found the ride quality to be vastly superior to the 996, even with larger wheels.
