Holy moly!

How can you tell it was a 997TT coolant pipe failure, though? Is there an article about it? I see the smoke but I don't think I can see the car.

Go to YouTube to watch and in the comments of the original poster they mention coolant pipe failure and the Porsche in the crash looks to be some form of 997 as far as I can tell. I cannot find an article in Google about this particular crash yet.

Could just be reasoning as this was a known issue on 997.1 GT3s and Turbos if the pipes were not pinned/welded. Since it was a coolant spill, perhaps it could have been due to a pipe failure. But it could also have been flying debris through the radiator.

Edit: Just saw the comments section mentions a pipe failure as the cause.

I've been on the track with a car that leaked coolant and it's one of the scariest things, you have zero control. It happened to me on a rainy track day, luckily with just a light spin that I got out of safely.

I guess I'm just dense. I don't see anyone's comments saying it was a coolant pipe spill, and the smoke first appears at around 27 seconds in his video and I can't see the car it's coming from, and I don't see it in that Nigel guy's video either.

Read the article a few days ago. It was a GT3RS. They did not specify the year of the car. My guess is 2010 or 11 because of all the failures.

At the very least, our cars should be running Redline Water Wetter when on track instead of coolant. Ideally, welded fittings.

Edit: here's in car video from a GT3RS following, looks like it was a 991 GT3RS involved, doesn't look there is any 997 car involved in the mess at all.

Are you talking about the orange one? That one came in after the original guy got out of his car, at about 1:05 in his video. It's not the car to initiate the whole mess.

Ay, you're right. When watching both videos you get a better timeline. Still don't see a 997 car anywhere in that POV video. Of course he may be way up the track overheating with all the carnage well behind him.

Someone on other thread(s) said it was 7.1 RS (2007 or 2008). Video guy should not have stopped there IMO. Any event, FUGLY.

Edit - Side note, have heard about many more RS spilling fluid than turbos - perhaps b/c more track duty?

Yeah, I'm not trying to be tedious and I can certainly believe it was some Mezger-related coolant pipe catastrophe, I've just been struggling to see the evidence in the videos. Apparently there are articles that clear it up, I guess.

I believe the dominant theory is that lots of heat cycles break down the glue faster.

It’s mentioned in some of the articles, these 2 for example. I’m guessing it was noted in the report of the incident.

“As it turns out, the pile-up started when a Porsche 911 GT3 RS broke a coolant hose into Hatzenbach, spilling fluid over the road. According to a report from Bridge to Gantry, two drivers were hospitalized from the accident, and one had to be cut out of an Audi to be rescued by a helicopter.”

http://www.motortrend.com/news/frigh...t-nurburgring/

“Four days of driving, spread over two circuits, the Nordschleife and the full Nürburgring F1 circuit. And then, just minutes from the last lap of the day…

… a 911 GT3RS pops a coolant hose into Hatzenbach and 13 more cars pile in, unable to stop on the fluid spill.”

So why no cameras and "Accident Ahead" electronic boards around the circuit?
