997 GT2 RS => CGT : Trade???
#16
Am going to go somewhat against the majority of the thread. The cgt is a fabulous car but primarily has to be driven to be enjoyed. As an investment/collectible I'd keep the 2rs. In this current market the fact the cgt hasn't been valued to the same degree as any number of 911s suggests that it's not appreciably going to go up despite it's unique attributes imo rather than for it being certain to go up at some point as some have suggested both here and in other threads. The uniqueness of the cgt in many cases puts it at a disadvantage as it sits somewhat uneasily in the pantheon of Porsche supercars. The 959 and 918 clearly exist as tech showcases that are streamed down (or will be in time) to the rest of the range. The cgt pretty much exists by itself with not much other than an aborted racing program as it's backstory. It's still by far the most exiciting Porsche to drive imo but driving experience has nothing to do with collectibility.

I own both cars...feel free to PM me if you want to discuss my experience and thoughts. Bottomline, you can't go wrong with either and there is a reason why I would tell you to own both...they are both exciting as hell to drive!
I'm considering a trade of my 2RS (pristine, 1,000 miles, never tracked, yada yada yada) for a CGT. There obviously are a number of factors driving a yay/nay decision - the cars themselves, their perceived and forecasted collectibility, their relative values, etc. I haven't yet settled on a firm view, so thought I would solicit input from this esteemed group to make things clearer (or not 😉.
A bit more color first. Either car for me likely is to remain a collectors piece first, occasional sunny Sunday driver second. As a result, I'm only considering like-for-like trades (not necessarily in $, but in condition). In other words, I'm not interested in a 10,000 mile CGT. I'm quite content to own either happily for years; this isn't an opportunistic flip, though this is where one must pay attention to relative values.
Without getting into my personal ledger for each, I'd welcome thoughts from the group. Thank you kindly in advance!

What ever you get or do,the only investment a car is your enjoyment!
That being said Im not saving my cars for my wives next husband or anyone else for that matter! The guy who dies with the most mileage wins! Go for a drive!

love to say a CGT, but a GT2 is just such a wicked machine that can be used....

Thank you everyone for all the thoughts. I will certainly let you all know if the 2RS finds itself replaced (or sharing the garage!)

As much as I loved my 997 GT2 (more than 991.1 RS and 997.2 GT3/RS and 997.1 GT3 and 996.2 GT3), after putting on a few thousand miles on the CGT over a couple of open track days and drives through the mountains... the choice is natural. No thought needed.
If you're still thinking about a trade, I'll bet you haven't driven or experienced a CGT.
When you do, your emotions will override whatever "investment" decision you think you are making. Your heart will stay true to the CGT. Anyone with one or experienced one will never forget the uniquely visceral experience.
However, the 997 GT2 is a very cool, limited edition car. You can't go wrong.
OP - please drive/experience a CGT, then come back and post how happy you are making the trade.

I've owned both cars. If I were to get another one it would be the CGT, hands down. CGT is just in a different league. Even thou the GT2 is a very fast and unique car in the end it's a 911 and Porsche made a lot of 911. I traded my GT2 for a Speciale and have no regrets so far.
