My OEM caps look like the one on the right with the black lettering. It looks like the caps on the left were resprayed.

It is obvious the cap on the left has been painted.

You are very likely right, I will try a scrape thru the paint to conclude later today. Guess I need 4 new ones to satisfy the OCD...

BTW. Is there any good way to clean or refresh the grey/purple-ish center lock nut finish (anodized)?

yup, they are painted over... New set ordered.

took all 4 CL nuts apart to clean, inspect and re grease as to spec. Happy to see no wear marks at all on cone and washer.

CL finish cleans up nice using WD40 and MF cloths.
(btw it also disolves optimol grease really easy, something to note of cleaning the nuts occasionally between CL service)

So you repainted the nuts silver? How did you do it without losing the writing / markers on the centerlock nuts?

Are those markers needed for anything other than a point of reference? I may anodize mine to another color, and was wondering if losing all markings would be an issue for anything.

I did not paint anything, I cleaned the CL nuts and got new new center caps.

The scale around the nut is to tighten the wheel at road side without a tq wrench at hand, as I understand it.

.... soooo, were your rims also painted the same as your center caps? ... I'm guessing that since you did not know (that your caps were painted), that the colors matched between caps & rims... hence my question.

The CL nuts can be bought in grey, red, and black... I saw a post some years back of a GTS owner who anodised his red, they didn’t look anything like the factory - his attempt looked cheap. I’d personally pony up for the factory set. My two cents.

I've never owned a 997.2 but my CGT was delivered with different color nuts on each side. That may be what byeSteve is referencing. JBO
