How do 3.9-4.25 builds compare to 991s
#32
My 4.0 made 459 to the wheels on a dynojet.. That is more then a 991 GT3 but the PDK makes up for alot in straight line accel. If you are just talking speed or lap time.. A 991 GT3 is faster or the same with alot less work in the **** pit..
If you are talking driving experience and pleasure.. A hotrod 997 GT3 is hands down the better of the 2..
Alot of guys ask me what Porsche to get.. If you want a great 911 with "modern" performance and 911 feel.. I tell them to buy a 997.1 GT3 and build it.

My car made 440hp at the wheels with an M+M exhaust (aka. fu%king loud) and makes 426hp at the wheels in its current state (stock exhaust, center bypass, GMG race headers). It also has a race gas map that adds a bit to each of those (which I never use...)
Its the greatest car I have ever driven. Period. Open invitation to anyone near the Charlotte area that wants a ride. I'll give you $10 if you can make it through the ride without giggling.

Well, lets start to dig into the details. Does anyone know what the bore and stroke is for each offering?

Its not for the faint of heart
There are a couple of good threads on builds from people who have already chimed in here. Search 4.0 build
Jamie from Dundon has good write up different engine build configurations, can't remember where I found it. Sure Sharkwerks has tons of information as well.

There is a listing on EBay for 997.2 RS 4.0 conversion. Without going back and checking, they show reciepts for the 4.0 build at approx. 50K. Could include other stuff though.
Edit: $55.9K 4.0 conversion done at Porsche of Beachwood. Looks like OEM parts. Just reading between the lines, but would bet it was a case of an overrev needing a rebuild anyways, then the delta is pretty small- 3.8 vs. 4.0 complete rebuild

Cost varies widely depending on how far you go
4.0 is just a bore kit (pistons + cyl) and some head work
To optimize this you should get a 4.0 plenum and headers and exhaust
Do you want cams - don't need them but they make power and the engine is open
Tune?
Harmonic dampener?
Etc etc
To make the big pow you do it all
Pricing varies widely on some items (headers exhaust etc)
Do you want Capricorn junk cast pistons or the mahle ms ones?
A top notch done right job all in would be $40k plus
Now to go to 4.25 and a crank, new rods, new oil pump etc
