What happen with the radio delete? PCM create problems? I want to remove because sticky *****. I thought about peeling the noise insulation from the carpet though, but thought it was diminishing returns. Thanks for the nod on the voltphreaks, I will try one out.
Just the radio is like 3 lbs doesn't do anything
I removed EVERYTHING
I'd prefer now to have tunes, I listen to them when driving RS and enjoy it much more than no tunes
Damn thing gives me tinatus if I run it too hard anyway
curious how this would translate to the regular 997.1-3. the main thing i would imagine is the sunroof? Curious how much that portion weighs (I like my sunroof).
Biggest weight savings and easily reversible has to be wheels, side mufflers, seats.
For the sunroof, the assembly weights 24 lbs, but you could remove it and install a fiberglass panel from Getty Design, painted to match, and silicone and seal it to the existing weather strip, with some bracing below so it looks completely stock. The fiberglass panel weights 3 lbs, so the net weight reduction is 21 lbs. You also remove the existing headliner which is 3.75 lbs, and replace it with the non-sunroof headliner (4.0 lbs) and dome light panel so the interior is as stock as on a non sunroof car.
At the rear of the car, besides removing the side mufflers you can also remove the side muffler brackets, bumper side supports and heat shields, change from the steel to titanium tailpipe, replace the steel coil pack shields on the 07-09 cars to the aluminum ones on the 2010+s/Cups, replace the bumper beam to the lighter version on the 2009+ 997s, and the motor mounts to Wevos. If you use the steel center muffler, you can retain the titanium side flange brackets. Using the 2009+ bumper beam, you can remove the bumper warts, and cut replacements out of a block of EPS or EPP foam that may save your *** some day - EPP foam from behind the front bumper cover of a 90s-20s SAAB 900 works well. Total bumper weight drops to 6 lbs. You can also change the steel rear subframe diagonals to the aluminum ones from the Cup/4.0. Net loss from the rear would be 70+ lbs.
At the suspension lighter wheels and tires such as CCWs should remove about 38 lbs from rotational weight. If you have steel rotors, going to PCCBs drops 40 lbs. The rear springs on a 07-09 are unnecessarily heavy at 12 lbs. Replacement with 60mm springs with a Tarett adapter drops that to 8lbs. Depending on what you have now, the reduction is anywhere from 40-80 lbs.
Around the center of the car, the washer bottle tank is 5 lbs plus whatever water is inside. The passenger airbag behind the dash is 11 lbs. Gutting the cupholder while retaining the face is 1.75 lbs. The stock Porsche battery is 43 lbs - which I gutted and replaced with A123 lithium packs at 4.4 lbs. inside. If you looked at the battery, you'd think it was stock. The steel battery tray can be replaced with aluminum faced coroplast for another 1.75 lb cut. Shaving the foam as as the factory did on the 4.0s: from the floor carpet cuts 4 lbs. From the rear seat carpet section cuts 3.6 lbs, and the big rear shelf panel 2.9 lbs. If you do that, you'd want to retain some carefully spaced blocks to act as standoffs so the carpet keeps its shape and position to the chassis. I replaced the interior rear side panels (7 lbs) with formed coroplast panels covered with black Sliverknit carpet (1.6 lb/pr) and the ECU carpet cover with similar, reducing another 1.5 lbs. If you have the stock sofa seats (107 lbs, more if they're *** versions) you can replace with GT2 seats (74 lbs) or CGT seats (48.4 lbs). If you have the dual mass flywheel at 34 lbs, the one from the 3.8/4.0 RS weights 8.5 lbs. Some of this stuff may seem small but added up can be as much as 160 lbs not including a sunroof delete if also done.
