3.6 / 3.8 are motorsport derived engines. Huge motorsport experience in top flight sportscar racing and Cup cars. Can trace history back to the overall winner of Le Mans in 1998. DFI is just starting to be raced in major events. The 991 GT3R showed very well at Daytona and Sebring with the DFI engine. Believe the 991 RS is closer to that engine then the base 991 GT3 engine.

Funny, the first time i saw a 997 GT3 in person I was amazed by their presence and how low to the ground they were. Now that I have one I can tell you scraping the front is a almost daily occurrence. Good thing the front lip is fairly affordable to replace. Neither the 3.6 or 3.8 Mezger motors are DFI. Old school and tough as nails though. I'm not sure which has more racing history, but I would guess the 3.6 since it has been around a long time. GT1, 996, 997.1...

Thanks for the info brake dust and 757driver. After some researching and looking at the cars I've decided to set my sights on a Mk1. No particular rush in purchasing one but would love to know everyone's thoughts on modifications as well. When I do find a car I plan on changing the wheels and exhaust at least. Both of these are easy to revert to stock at a later time, though I'm unsure if I should do headers. I don't think I'll be touching the suspension but we'll see. Any others I should look into?

...do sharkwerks center bypass and evosit tune, then decide if u need anything else in the powertrain/exhaust
...re suspension... depends how u will use car... for road driving only stock everything is fine. if u track extensively u will need revised suspension...search u will find lots of info on cheap/simple vs expensive/major transformation options
...plan on pinning lines as mentioned above sooner or later if not done by p o... epoxy on coolant lines and fittings on 10 year old mk 1 cars will all need it
...wheels are wheels... more for looks and decrease unsprung weight if u track... stock wheels look good but are boat anchors

Thanks, much appreciated! I really wasn't thrilled with that picture as it was a very dreary, overcast day. But I was excited about the new wheels and did the best I could with an inexpensive Nikon pocket point-and shoot.
Here's a slightly better quality frontal view taken at the Porsche Experience Center a few weeks back with my very supportive and understanding spouse.
