Default OT: Storage Lifts

I wasn't sure where else to post this and it seems like several GT3 owners here have multiple cars so thought it might make sense to try this here:

I have run out of garage space and I need a storage lift. I've been doing research on these things for months and I still seem to be no closer to making a decision. My original must-have was that it be American Made but these seem to be far and few between. A local high-end car storage facility has loads of Rotary Revolution lifts that seem decent but they are MIC. Same with BendPak. There is a company called American Custom Lifts that designs/manufacturers some of their own lifts in the USA and also re-brands lifts from other manufacturers like Quality Lift and Challenger Lifts. But my research tells me that it may be best to stick with a name brand rather than a small company that may or may not be around when it comes time to service the lift.

So the criteria is: a high-quality ALI-certified storage lift that is safe, reliable and will be well supported post-sale. If it's made in the USA then great, but if it's certified/safe/reliable then I suppose that is sufficient.

I found some older threads here and at Garage Journal on this subject but was hoping that some of you with recent experience with the lifts I'm considering (or others) might care to weigh in.

Yes, however my main purpose is for working on the cars. I do 90% of the maintenance for the cars. The lift has ratchets so I let it down and the cars are supported by them, not the hydraulics. Plus it is asymmetrical to allow the doors to open more. It works well for my needs.

Has anyone used the American Custom Lift Voyager? It uses imported steel but an American made power unit and it's assembled in the US. Designed by Challenger.

Im just kicking off a garage makeover - think im going to go with two single post lifts, primarily for storage. Planning to mount the columns back to back so i maximize maneuverability around the cars/garage.

Single post lifts scare me.

I went with a Bendpak HD-9. The cylinder failed (leaked) after a month, they Fedex'd me a new cylinder overnight from CA to FL, no questions asked. Had me throw out the old one. Great customer service so far.

Spectacular garage and car collection. The HD-9 seems to be one of the more popular 4-post lifts, it seems to come up in these threads a lot. Thanks for the recommendation and the photo.

i went with direct lift... it is a very good lift, cost effective, smoothly operating... and just as importantly the vendor and installer are both local to the bay area and would offer warranty support if needed (not needed so far, smooth install)

pm me if u want contact info

If I might interject a question, what would be a reasonable/minimum ceiling height for a four post lift?

Our house reno is nearly done, which means I can finally get my garage! Hence, I'd like to plan ahead for future possible car storage. Thank you...T

I can fit my 991 RS underneath and either my 991 GT3 or 997 RS on top of my Bendpak HD-9 and I have 116 inches of clearance. I end up with around 3-4 inches to spare.

Here's a link to the renovation I did on the garage:

Any other questions, let me know. Happy to help.

^ Thanks a million. That's a tad short of 10 ft. So, 11 - 12 ft should do fine. Thanks, I'm trying to keep garage footprint to a min, since our city regs require 50% or less lot coverage. I'm gonna need to check out that Garage Journal site!

rule of thumb to stack regular passenger cars/sports cars is 10 ft min

if its a normal one-deep garage don't forget about garage door clearance
