I went with the GT4. I looked at a handful of 997 GT3's when i did my search but in the end a new car that i could build to suit my taste at the same price of a 997.1/2 appealed to me more.
You honestly could not go wrong with either choice.

also it’s clear that while they may have been similar in price then the 997.1-2 gt3 is well more expensive than a 981 gt4
and fwiw this was the most recent thread on this topic according to the googler

981 GT4 is going to be a bit more usable on street. More tech in the GT4 such as auto rev match. Have not driven a GT4. Only ridden in one. My friend has had both and has told me that the GT4 is easier to live with day to day.
997 GT3 is more raw though, better exhaust (to me) and for whatever reason was the car that immediately was the one I wanted after I drove it. Basically it was the car I had imagined when I dreamed of what a perfect drivers car would feel like.
I was cross shopping the two. The main selling point on the GT4 to me was the ability to get a better spec (PCCB's and buckets) and also a better condition car would be easier to find. More people were clear filming cars in 2015 (for 2016 model year cars) compared to in 2006 (for 2007 model year GT3's). Also, it's just newer, so the likelihood of wear is lower.
But in the end, I found the right previous owners that took care of my current car and went for it.
In today's market with pricing, you may be better off buying a 981 GT4, or even just ordering a 718 GT4. But if you really want the car that you may be dreaming about, I think the 997 GT3 is the way to go. For instance, a friend of mine was trying to find a 981 GT4. After watching prices go crazy he decided to spec one himself and pay the additional $20k over a 981 GT4 to get a 718 GT4 spec'd exactly how he wanted and just ordered it.

They are both great cars. Drive them both. For me, 997 all the way.

GT4 chassis is more capable and it is easier to drive. However, the engine and rawness of the 997 GT3 is enough for me to take it over a GT4. I still love both though.

too much tech, numb steering, wasn't smaller (same size basically), capable car but I had been daily driving a GT3 for years prior, so, was likely biased from that

I thought I actually *wanted a GT4 when I was car shopping. I had 911s before and wanted to try the mid engine platform. A good friend talked me out of the GT4 and into my 997.2 GT3, and I've never looked back. The engine is a lot more appealing in the GT3, and there's something about the hydraulic steering. I autocross mine, and don't have any trouble keeping up with the mid engine cars. I've never once had a regret about skipping the GT4.
