Thinking of Leaving the Air Cooled World ... Why 997 GT3 instead of 991 GT3
#33
You answered your own question.
The Mezger 997 is in the history books and the 991 is evolving as we speak. The 991 GT3 is large and in charge, it is also technologically advanced but the sensory feedback and involvement is lacking.
Talk to some 996 GT3 owners and they will say the same about the 997 GT3.

997.1 would be my choice. It's more raw than than 997.2 car, it's harder to control and therefore more rewarding - to me.
The 991 is a complete video game. Fast as hell, but you can track it in auto mode with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding a thermos with coffee.

This whole argument is a spectrum, the edge of which is usually defined by post purchase ad hoc hypothesis. If you want a raw car that's hard to control, buy a 996 GT2. It makes a 997.1 GT3 feel like a miata.

This statement is ludicrous. The 991 is about 15% less raw and about 30% more capable. The only way you would be relaxed and not involved would be if you slowed down to match the speed of your buddies driving 997s.

Citing percentages of rawness difference or capabilities between the cars coupled with a baseless reason for other non favorable opinions doesn't do you any favors either.
It is no secret how easy the 991 GT3 is to drive fast. To some it may be "engaging" but to others it is not. You may need two hand on the wheel to drive it fast, some of us don't.

my personal bias...
get a 'Mezger' GT3 ... the 991 is a very capable car, more so than any of its predecessors but IMO its not a 'real' GT3... it has no connection with motorsport in the same way the Mezger cars did... and I am not really sure that it will
teach you how to be a better driver as those cars do...
If I was in the market for a GT3 I'd import a 996.2 RS from europe under the 2500mi/yr DOT importation rules ... if you want the ultimate 'raw' GT3 experience
teach you how to be a better driver as those cars do...

Other than the thrills from the tactile nature of the 7GT3 and its utterly brilliant engine, Larry has the key point here, IMO
The 991 is amazing as a technical achievement and it is stupidly fast. But it is very easy to drive and I can feel its intrinsic capabilities make me seem like a better driver than I am.
The 997 has lower limits (though still very high by any objective, modern road-legal sports car standard), has more pendulum effect with rear engine and you need to shift the gears. So I need to respect the car more, drive it with alot more concentration, and stay focused and have utterly smooth and coordinated movements 100% of the time for maximum performance. Done well, driven well, I feel like I have really accomplished something that is extremely gratifying... this occurs to some degree with a 1GT3 but much less so (even with the nannies off).
I feel great, clean laps with fast lap times with a 1GT3 is Porsche's great achievement.
With a 7GT3 it is MY achievement.
Make no mistake... I am keeping my 1GT3. But I enjoy the driving experience with a 7 the best.

^^ Yep pretty much my sentiment!
A good track friend of ours just picked up an 81 Carrera race car - he normally tracks a cayman S PDK. He's very much looking forward to the skill it will take to whip that car around the track at a reasonable pace, and knows he's in for a real learning experience.
And it's a FAST car, the guy he bought it from runs with 997RS on track with it.

life is about choices. why marry one woman when you can have a harem.
i just hang up the red lantern.
997 vs 991. whatever floats your boat is the best
california is a polygamous state, no?
has to be. why else would real estate cost so much?

Figure about 2500 sq ft per woman when you buy.

but you probably be best working with a specialist company like Malton in the
UK or a german dealer ... and needless to say they are NOT cheap
that is what makes this car GREAT ... its a scalpel ...
