Anyway, having driven both. The 991 GT is brutally fast, but it has a connection missing. It did not talk to me the way the 997 does or the GT4 did. It has less of a mechanical feel and felt more insulated. Don't get me wrong, they are stupid fast and precise. But the steering, the 'butt feel', the SIZE, etc just don't work for me. Candidly, I'm in the camp of not needing the latest and fastest car, because there will always be a faster car. I look for other things. Cars that feel great to me: later classic 911 (G, I have an 89), 964 C2, 997 GT4, GT4.

You really need to drive both and decide for yourself.
+1 - I've driven both, but only lived with a 997. The new 991 seems (like I'm guessing 993 folks would say about the 997) to have removed a lot of the character and connection, and replaced it with Teraflops and serious speed. It's taken me 2 years to learn the 997 GT coming from a BMW. If it were a 991, it would have taken one weekend.

991 is a superior car around town though. Hell it has cup holders.

997.1 would be my choice. It's more raw than than 997.2 car, it's harder to control and therefore more rewarding - to me.

The 991 is a complete video game. Fast as hell, but you can track it in auto mode with one hand on the steering wheel and the other holding a thermos with coffee.

Thanks everyone. I received varying opinions, as you would expect, via each forum. The two constants were 'keep the 993' and 'do whatever you can to drive/ride in each GT3' which amounts to great advice. Next steps try to find some generous rennlisters in the DFW area to do a ride along.

Get some seat time in both the 997 and 991; ensure you can push the 991 fairly hard, otherwise it will seem sterile.

Agreed. That car is not for the general public.

Would a request to inquire about a comparison between the 997 GT3/ 991 GT3 and a comparable turbo be out of line. Just in terms of comparative driving experience.

Obviously you have to drive some GT3s.
Before I recently purchased my 997.1, I drove a 2004 GT3, and a 2010 GT3, as well as 996 Turbo and 997.2 Turbo.
While the 996 GT3 is raw and mechanical, the interior and exterior were very similarr to my 996 C4S, inlcuding the spilt dual exhausts. This one was stock and I could really hear the Mezger engine which was awesome experience.
The 997.2s in my area (Philly) with 10k miles or less were selling for over MSRP, at least 6 months ago, so the demand is high and supply limited. Beast of a GT3 for sure.
I think the 991 GT3 is beautiful car/911, and you cant really knock it when Pro drivers and many journalists rave about the car.

IMO, the 997.1 GT3 is the most pure modern raw Porche for the money, with the more classic 911 look.
Good luck in your hunt and future purchase.

I own a 997.1 GT3 and live near Fort Worth. I will be at Motorsport Ranch in Cresson, Texas (just south of Fort Worth) this Saturday and Sunday. You are welcome to take my car for a drive. Also, at noon, we do parade laps around the track for a small donation. Your welcome to take it out. There will be a lot of 991 GT3 owners at the track that you may be able to talk into doing the same. PM me if your interested.

^^^Great offer- you will be able to see through all the fluff especially the negatively charged fluff on 991 GT3's.
