Anyone who wears their 911 tires equally isn't driving it properly.....JK....but not really because it's a drive off the back end car if there ever was one.

Peter I'm also having trouble grasping the same brake points as 997 GT3 which is A LOT faster and heavier so brakes a lot earlier?

Ultimate 911 is the 996 GT3. Best of both worlds

964 is lighter and slower
997 is faster and heavier
but 997 has MUCH bigger brakes, much better braking system.
so doesn't surprise the points are similar.

Yup and I added more tire, suspension and not much power, 260 to the wheels. I have big reds on mine so maybe I do brake a little later but brake duration and turn in feels pretty much the same. It doesn't stop like GT3 but it doesn't need to.

No offense. But I thought that article read like a bunch of baloney. It's classic auto journalist who doesn't really know much but with a fat vocab and art for words. In fact, I even wrote to my friends saying that I think I am going to cancel my sub because of it. I prefer more balanced reviews, not this that reads almost like Porsche marketing material. There was an article about the .1 vs .2 rs and I thought it was also gross (for the same reasons). I spent some time in the automotive world on the marketing side I do feel qualified in my view.

That said I respect YOUR opinion as you obviously have a lot of wheel time between the two cars. I also love the 964 and am about to buy one myself but because it's a friends car. It's a cab for the family

Rotor size typically doesn't allow you to brake later just keeps you from replacing pads and rotors as often

Any 964 track/race car is braking hella later than 997 GT3 track/race car and that's a FACT and I'm sticking to my story. Like a good brake marker or two later

I agree about a well setup 964/993 feeling similar to a well setup later model 911. I also love the size and weight of the 964/993 but imo a 996 gives you that tossable vibe along with enough grunt/speed to increase the joys of straights, braking, throtttle steer etc... Which is why in my book it's the best of both worlds for straight up driving feel. However it does come with more headaches/expense and isn't as attractive so overall I'll give the win to the 964/993

My buddy just ran a 2.06 at VIR in a track prepped 993 which is not too shabby for a street car

PS Peter in time your brake duration is going to feel much less. IMO the thing may even go in quicker because of the weight especially if you increase tire size.

Non taken.
I'm not exactly a word smith either.
Keep in mind my car is far from stock and I posted somewhere very similar words as mine above about the GT3 VS 964 when i got the 964 coming out of the 4.0. I was fully prepareren to be dissapointed and dump the 964 but wasnt.

As a 3-time (and current) 964 owner I think this article glorifies the 964 beyond reason. Yeah, they are good cars, but if I had to sell one of my 3 Porsches the 964 would be the first to go. There is no comparison between a 964 and a 997 in terms of capability. None. And if you want to upgrade an air-cooled car and make it a real driver's car, get a 993. Everything on the 993 is superior from the factory and it is a much easier car to modify and have fun with. But the 964 does have that retro look that is popular these days.

Even with the updated rear suspension on the 993, the 964 had better road feel.

Apologies to the 993 owners out there but I think the US versions of those cars are overrated from a driving standpoint. I'll take a 5-speed 964 any day over a 993.
This pretty much nails it! Despite their beauty, I hate how 993's drive and passed up a perfect 6 speed coupe for $21k in 2009. Don't regret that decision one bit, especially since our '93 C2 came along not too long after and is the most fun car I've ever driven. It's perfectly fun and exciting at normal speeds. Everything about the driving experience, the size, old suspension design, cockpit position, weighted controls, road noise, smells, and sounds are just sensational! When the GF and I go out for a special occasion we take the 964. Meanwhile the GT3 sits in the garage waiting for events where speed / time matters...

If I had to choose between a fully stock 964/993/996/997 on track- I choose 996 every time. That car is extremely rewarding. Mike

I will take my 3.2 Carrera with 915 over a 964. I personally think the 964 too much of a tween. It's not quite vintage and it's not quite modern. It was good in its day but no benchmark in 911 development.

I did that too:

- factory RS suspension
- big reds
- quaife LSD
- steel synchros on 3rd
- MAF kit and ECU
- ERP spring plates on the rear semi-trailing arms
- bunch of monoballs F/R
