Sourcing synchros
Had an RMS issue over the weekend and in the process of fixing I figured I would address a 2nd gear synchro issue. From PCNA it looks like a 2nd gear motorsports syncro to replace the brass stock one retails for 1800-1900 (wow!). There has got to be a better option. I've seen mention of Guard selling syncros, but wondering if they are the same thing as the motorsports parts, or something different. I think Rader gets his parts from Guard, so I'd expect it's a quality part - possibly the same - but I figured I'd ask here as well.
Mechanic is dubious as to the quality of a non-PCNA motorsports part.
TIA

There are a few extra pieces that need to be swapped the first time around when going to the steel cup car ones. If you ever have to replace these ones, will be cheaper as the extra parts are already there.

I have used the Guards parts in my rebuild - same part... and would rather give them my money...
I had heard that prices were going up, but this is crazy....

They don't come with these part. Stock transmission has brass synchros for 1 & 2, and normal steel for 3-6. You can upgrade to the motorsports parts for $.

I have seen the used trannies g for $12-$18k depending.
I spent $8-$10k just on parts - 1st,2nd,4th,5th, synchros, bearings, etc.
Brass for 1st gear cuz 'racers don't need no stinkin 1st gear' and for 2nd due to $$

Wouldn't need 2nd except for COTA...

I've been living without it, but it's worth about 0.5-1sec from the comparisons we've done.

Can you describe this 2nd gear synchro issue? What's going on?

There is no 'issue'.
The OEM 2nd gear synchro is made of a brass alloy, and the motorsports version is steel. So if your shifting style uses synchros a lot, in particular 2nd gear, it may wear out faster.

For me it is manifesting as a problem getting into and out of 2nd at full boil at the track. Separate issues with 1st - I've had maybe a one in three chance of not being able to get into 1st at a stop light (turns out to be 1st gear synchro and clutch guide tube).
