Default GT4 weight reduction ideas

I think porsche hit the ball out of the park with the gt4, the two things I think they could have done better were:

1. Dry sump engine
2. Weight!! 2950lbs??

I imagine, this car would be unbelievable at 2600lbs or thereabouts. What do you guys think can be accomplished while keeping the car street legal? And what is possible in terms of weight target if stripped?

I think the engine is perfect for the application. Bullet proof and not too expensive to replace in the event of something failing. Works well in the BGB cars.

I think the GT4 kept as stock as possible but with R tires, proper pads/fluid, and stripped trunks/cockpit would be the perfect little hotrod with warranty.
Throw in an imported full clubsport cage and you have a lil bastard for weekend track days and something to drive in anger to the office during the week days...

I would take what ever aero, wheels and suspension bits that come on the GT4 cup and put them on the street GT4 to make it complete.

Getting to 2600lbs while remaining street legal would be tough. Reality is 2950 is probably lower than it'll really be on our shores, my guess is closer to 3050. Spec it with 0 options, AC delete, no radio, PCCB, painted white, carbon buckets it might get close.

To get to 2600lbs would require a full strip, body panels, lexan, doors, big time diet, cage to boot. Now not so street legal.

Example: 997.1 RS advertised weight 3031lbs. But, none here weigh close. Mine is a 0 option car, steel brakes, halogen lights, lightweight seats, no radio, rear cage, lightweight battery, light wheels, delete exhaust and it weighs 3050 with 2/3 tank fuel. Stock it was over 3100 lbs. Getting any lighter will require way more street compromise than I want (stripped interior, carbon panels, etc...).

You can always lose weight out of factory exhausts. I have had both aluminum and thin wall steel custom built with MASSIVE weight savings.

On a side note this usually costs ~$1,000 instead of the $4,000 you lunatics pay for a titanium exhaust.

You can also usually lose weight from the seats and of course interior trim and bits.

Carbon hood, lexan, lightweight doors, seats, exhaust and carpet. Not 2600 but 2700-2750?

Lightweight exhaust.

Lithium ion battery (no rws so shouldn't be an issue).

LWFW might be possible, but don't think it's ever been fitted to a non-Mezger engine by the factory.

The three above items are probably good for nearly 100 lbs. if the exhaust is very light.

getting below 3000 pounds in any modern day car coming to the USA is very challenging nowadays with all the safety equipment required. Sure a miata or mini cooper can weight 2600 pounds but those cars also won't lap sub 8min at the ring. Also any more lightening would likely have cost more money since it wouldn't be as simple as just removing things but instead producing a lighter frame subframe etc which would increase costs.

I think the motor it has is fine as again it keeps costs low and makes it easier to repair since it shares the same engine as many 991s already.

can they try to make the GT4 better? Sure, but it would cost more. They basically were able to create a car using parts from vehicles already in production to keep costs low but performance and driving experience high.

And gearing according to some, but that's an easy fix. Just call Matt: http://www.guardtransmissionllc.com/

The new Miata weighs 2,200 lbs. Slap a blower and big wheels/tires on the car and you're looking at maybe adding 100 extra lbs - and you'll be looking at 300+ whp in a 2,300-2,400 lb car that can pull 1.2-1.3g

Pretty good info here.

Top contenders on my old Gen 1: Take the high, heavy rear hatch (steel, glass, a f*cking steel weight to reduce vibration) and make it CF and lexan, CF doors IF YOU HAVE A FULL CAGE (otherwise the built in door bars are keeping you safer), LI battery, 2-piece rotors (10# per corner), PCCB (another 10#), lighter wheels, remove trim in front and rear trunks, lightweight shell seats, CF bumpers and front fenders. Unless you go cage/CF doors, this is still a "normal" street car, with over 100# out. AC, Heater core, radio, CD, headlights (in the daytime), exhaust, can get over 200# out and still have an interior, things pretty easily reversible. After that, you are gutting it, and it is just a race car.

those LWB arent that right. they gotta be heavier that the gt2 seat cuz of the electric motor. Aftermkt will be the way to go, of course you'll lose the side airbags.
also 19in wheels.

Looking at all these posts reminded me that I have to loose 25 pounds. A lot cheaper than that carbon hood or lightweight exhaust.

getting the weight that low would be pretty tough and keeping it street legal. my race car in my avatar is 2760 and its completely bare besides cage, seat, steering wheel, and dash
