Update: I spoke to the SA at Stead Porsche by phone (don't have a relationship there - just know the car was at one point serviced there). Overall I came away with the impression it was unlikely they would be willing to look at this issue as related to / covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty. SA echoed what others on the forum have said: "Turn the nozzle to the 9 o'clock position and use the lowest flow rate setting". I tried to call BS by pointing out that nowhere in the manual is this cockamamie procedure prescribed but was told that they have had several complaints of this nature from 997 owners and the 1st thing their service techs do is take the owners to the gas station and make them fill up the tank that way and if it works that's "case closed". I will check with another Porsche dealer but I realize that this in large part seems to depend on the dealer's goodwill.

That was happening to me and it is quite annoying, the solution is what was mentioned with the relief valve. If you have this issue, just watch or hold the nozzle in as it may pop out and spew gas all over the place. That has happened to me twice, so nowadays I get out of the car and make sure that I am holding the handle - I am in NJ and they don't have the concept of self service, but I get out anyway and hold it in. The two times that the nozzle came shooting out, I would say about 1 - 1 1/2 gallons spilled on the car and the ground before the nozzle shut off.
