Default noise front end in left turns

Hello,

my name is Tom, i am new here at rennlist.
Living in Tegernsee in Germany, a small town
close to Munich.
I bought a 2010 GT3-2 four weeks ago, never
used on a track, only 7K mls, looks like new.
Unfortunately after driving the car only for 2
days a very strange sound from the right front
end appeared in a left turn. It can be reproduced on
every turn and stops when you slightly touch the
brakepedal.
The Car is now at Porsche in Munich since 4 Weeks,
they checked the wheel bearing, shock absorber,
the entire wheel mount, changed the brake disks
and the supporting mounts but still have no clue !!

I posted a video on the german pff.de forum hoping
that somebody would recognize the sound and could
help solving the problem - but no luck so far.
Thats why i am reaching over the ocean to maybe
find somebody who recognizes the problem and who
can give some advise.
Season is very short here - snow from october till april -
and 1 month trial and error at porsche munich at the
best time of the year unable to use my new toy makes
me very unhappy.

Here you can hear the problem

Thank you very much for your help

Tom

If you use a wheel/tire combination that is even slightly bigger (or with a different offset) than stock, the tire will rub the plastic fender liner when you turn. Makes an ugly noise, but does not hurt anything. If this is the problem, you can see the scrapes on the plastic liner. I have a combination that rubs even when the car is stationary, so it is easy to see the cause of the noise by turning the wheel and checking the clearance. If your wheel/tire is not as large, it may rub only when you are braking, hit a bump, or load the suspension while turning.

I also had a loose bracket on the back side of the wheel carrier (either the wheel speed sensor or the brake pad sensor) that made impressive noises, but did not hurt anything. Finally found it, tightened it, and all is quiet and good....

Sounds like its rubbing a liner. Did they check to see if liners are misaligned or something? Mike

Hi facelvega, hi Mike,

thank you for your ideas !
Its all stock, nothing changed and everything is tight and in place
- and no signs of rubbing. The noise appears when the suspension is
loaded in the turn but also disappears when you hit the brake in the
turn !
The frequency of the noise stays the same independent of speed or
radius of the turn.

If noise stops with braking maybe a lazy piston going south? Something is definitely binding. Swaybar is tite? But that noise is more like clunking. Mike

Have you personally had the wheel off to look for anything loose? Dealers are not worth much in this department.

Frequency independent of speed?? Check for a loose tie rod end or bad bushing. Unlikely to be rotating assembly if independent of speed.

Yeah, not heard it before or heard anyone with that problem. Something is not right get it checked out.

Must be a loose bolt or something off, but don't worry that cars are solid.

It sure sounds to me like a a wheel weight rubbing on the air deflector or the wheel rubbing on the fender liner. The test would be to remove the fender liner and air deflector, neither of which is difficult, and see if the noise goes away. If that is the problem, it will self adjust as the plasstic wears away. Don't miss your track season!

Hi there,

thanks for all your Inputs !
Everything around the wheel has been checked, it was off
several times - nothing loose. Brakes have been checked
and replaced (pads and disks) but the noise stayed.
No signs of rubbing on the liners.
I'll have them check the wheel weights but it would
need a lot of them to produce this constant noise.

The origin of the sound seems to be not only from the
fender but also from behind the dashboard of the co-driver.
The independence of speed and the constant noise during
a left turn made me think that it could be some failure in the
Brake or Steering System. The noise starts at a certain load on
the steering wheel and not at a certain steering angle.
Porsche says that those Systems would produce a failure message
if there was something wrong, so they just keep on disassembling
and replacing without knowing what the problem is ...

Enjoy your Weekend and your track season !

I can't watch the video due to the China internet restrictions, but based off the descriptions, it sounds like a wheel bearing starting to go bad. At first, they'll make noise under cornering loads, and then eventually in a straight line. Just my guess from the descriptions and without having seen the video.

Hi Tom
I agree with everything that has been said above. If you have the know how I would be pulling the brake caliper and rotor to make sure nothing was stuck/jammed in behind.
Here is another WAY out idea that I am in jeopardy of looking like a goof which can happen on occasion.
This sound may be coming from your heater fan. As you turn there could be an object that comes in contact with the rotating fan. Maybe make sure the fan is off and do a test. If it was off then turn the fan up to high and test again. Just an outside the box thought. I live in the country and you'd be surprised at what you find in fan motors etc..
I would try the rotor / caliper idea first as other have suggested.

Bit of a noodle twister.

Cheers

Brent

thank you for all the good ideas here !

Ill be at the Porsche Zentrum tomorrow and
check if all the things you mentioned are
ruled out of being the cause for the noise.
They have been working on it for 4 Weeks
now - so some out of the box thinking is very
appreciated !

Take care

Tom

Problem solved ... so far !
They changed the wheel bearing althoug they said
it wasnt't causing the noise !
And the noise is gone - didn't have a lot of time to
check - but looks like it is fixed !
