Maxxis RC-1 R Comp: Potential GT3 Interest?
As many of you know, Nitto recently started making the NT01 in GT3 compatible sizing. For those of us that have tried it, most agree it's an awesome DE tire at a budget price point (approx. 1/2 the MSCP). Problem now is, there is no supply and no word as yet whether we'll get more any time soon.
Cut to today. I contacted a friend at Maxxis Tire (ex-Nitto employee with contacts still within the company) to see if he could get some info on the NT-01 supply. About a year ago, his company started making a streetable DOT R compound called the RC-1. Reviews and feedback have been very positive with performance on par with the NT-01 and a similar price point. When the RC-1 first came out, I told him "make this in GT3 sizes and you'll sell a ton!". He said "Soon!".
Tire info here:

Well, today he said he is working a bit more seriously on GT3 sizing. He was curious about what sizes we were using in 18" so I told him the 245/305 combo but that it would be preferable to have RS sizing as well. He also mentioned 19" OE NB sizing as a candidate.
So now the questions: how attractive would this tire be to the GT3 crowd and in what preference of sizing? This is a tire that could be driven to the track without fear of anything (except maybe rain) and would not cycle out like a Hoo Hoo slick. I'll pass on any feedback posted here.

Tell him to make a 245/40/18 and/or a 255/35/18 and then either a 325/30/18 or a 335/30/18 and I'll buy 4 sets.

My .02
I was intrigued by this tire when it came out but I think they really shot themselves in the foot by only releasing it in very limited sizes. This tire was announced at SEMA 2012 if I remember correctly so it's been around for awhile.
I searched again, as I have done before, and There are plenty of comparisons to NT-01 which make this tire look like a great competitor, however I can't find any good info as to the characteristics of the tire as it wears and gets heat cycles on it.
New for New they are supposed to perform equally but with different characteristics (Nitto likes to slide around Maxxis likes cleaner driving). But new isn't when the Nittos is at it's best. Nitto doesn't get good until it's half gone and it's best right before it cords. Even the Sister tire to the NT-01 (R888) doesn't behave in this fashion. I can't find any info on how the Maxxis performs as it ages and without that I'm not convinced it's the tire for me.
Finally if they are still thinking about what sizes to produce next I can't see them showing up before the Nitto gets the next batch of NT-01's made.

The Nitto NT01 in the 305-35-18 size is here to stay, rest assured.
Maxxis was advertising their 275-35-18 tire back when I was tracking my E46 M3...that was 3 years ago, and you couldn't buy the Maxxis until a year ago. I'm not going to be holding my breath waiting on them to make a 305-35, but that's the size they need to make if they want to sell tires, just ask Nitto.
