Default Z28 vs GT3 991 Autoweek

Wow Autoweek just came in today. Not a great test but looks like the z28 is in the money with a 991 GT3!

Less than a sec difference in lap times to GT3 but 56k dollars cheaper with z28 offering better sticking in corners and GT3 gets straightline.
GT3 gets less mechanical grip and needs more downforce. Bottomline the GT3 is a better street car the z28 a better track car. But 56k clams cheaper.....that is some heavy savings! Nice to see GM coming out with GT performance cars!!

Supposedly the stickier tires the Z28 comes with from the factory helped. But no denying the overall performance potential on that car despite the looks, weight, etc, etc.

The z28 has a great set of shocks---better than gt3

Also other than the big V8......biggest z28 advantage is the super large front tire and wheel combo---------that and the car being easier and less expensive to service than a gt3.

Still those carbon rotors can't be cheap to replace.

Also forgetting that the Z28 does not catch on fire....at least unknown at this point.

And it did all of that with a MANUAL......and a 400lb weight disadvantage. You can't help but respect GM's engineers.

New 2014 Z28 with full warranty is approx same price as 2007 GT3 without warranty.

I have driven both platforms and really like the steering feel and view from the 911 window.

Id take the 2007 GT3 for the same money.

Great Camaro however. It maybe worth holding if you are collector. Maybe...

I drove a C5 Z06 for a track day and absolutely loved it. Hard not to go for that cheap American V8 power! Maybe when they open the track across from the Museum which is about an hour from my house....

the tires make a big difference but that's not taking away from the enormity of what the engineers achieved with the z28. Really, really impressive. The only thing I wonder about is how much the car tramlines (follows grooves and cambers) with front tires that size.

With a 305 FRONT tire you're going to be bouncing around like a ball on a roulette wheel!

305 is massive. Thats must be wider than cup cars.

+1 Porsche would have us believe the only way to keep up these days is to throw as many gadgets and electronics at the car as possible. PDK, RWS etc etc. Then GM puts their foot in Porsches mouth by making a vastly heavier, slower in straight line car with manual transmission handle better.

Porsche couldn't get owned any more than they are right now.........

Thank you GM.

I want the Z28 more than a Z06 at this point.

No, track Vettes have been running 315 and even up to 335 on the front for years now. No bouncing, which has nothing to do with tire size, just fast.

I think he means bouncing around sideways as being pulled from camber to camber, as he quoted my original post regarding tramlining...
