If you look at the air cooled turbo market, those cars have exploded over the last 6 mos.
Early 930s are trading over 100k, now a decent 86-89 930 is 55-75k, slants are off the radar. A 87 505 car last yr went for 60, now they trade in the mid 80s, ask me how I know. In fact, 930s have eclipsed 964 turbos (except the 3.6), bc they were one of the most important sports cars ever produced. 3.3 964 turbos have flattened and are probably the least desirable of the lot. 993tt's are appreciating slower, however a good 993tt will fetch in the 90s today. Will these aircooled cars still be popular in another 20 yrs, probably not but they will still command big bucks, the more original/stock the better. Clearly, the collector car market is a generational thing.
Of the current 997s, any low production mezger car has potential. All of the RSs for example will be valuable. Pristine low mile 997.1 turbos with manuals will appreciate in time (ie 993turbos), bc of the mezger/g50 combo. probably the most valuable 997 will be the 4.0RS.
unfortunately, none of the scarlet letter 996s will have any value imo, they have always been the red headed step child of the Porsche world.

I like the thought, retire in my mid 40's - early 50's. With how quickly the money goes to Washington I think few of us will be retiring then. Tack on another 10 years of age to the cars.

Just not sold on current cars being so desirable just on the fact they are so technologically driven vs. old school mechanical. An old muscle car is basically motor/tranny/bodywork. My nephew is in automotive school and when I talk to him, half the discussion is about the diagnostic computers and learning them as much as fixing a frozen wheel bearing. Current cars are like driving computers. Not confident as to the abilities of 2010 DCT 20 years from now. SMG for BMW is a dinosaur and less than 10 years old. Reason for manual transmission in my book. On another forum, there is a big discussion about ICE pedal. The car basically thinking the worst and essentially not braking based on the infinite number of decisions it's making when you hit the brakes. Think of electronics in cars from the late 80's like simple digital dashes, I can't fathom the price to fix them, but the car was still relatively mechanical and easy to fix.

I'm one that enjoys driving these cars and not looking for investments, but not sure when I retire i'm looking to pick up a 25 year old Porsche. Maybe a 40 year old one instead!

Yup sadly a lot of kids like the "Disconnected" feeling of the ever rising in Nisosan GTR.

Wouldn't mind to get a .6 GT3RS over here to the states. They didn't build enough of them so they qualify for that Bill Gates 959 law right? I can't imagine they built more than a 1000 of the .6 RS for EU market?

Anything normally aspirated, manual, homologated specials with ties to Porsche motorsport will be the most collectable. Turbo tech was cool and interesting 30 years ago. The air cooled Turbos have become somewhat of an anachronism. I just don’t see anything special about the new Turbo cars either. Each successive generation, Porsche will make something slightly quicker, but they’ve been numb since the 996 and haven’t been any better of late. These days econo cars run turbos. Even Ferrari and BMW will be incorporating them. I’m sure people will always look for what’s not common. In 10 years good ol’ NA cars will be the ones to own.

Seems to me, same was said about the 964 a few years ago! Only time will tell.

So true.

You know they won't be making any more gt2's right? The 993 wasn't sold here. The 996 sells at a massive discount. The 997 is still quite expensive. Hmmm.

Numb is hardly a word I would use to describe a GT2.

And turbo tech is hardly yesterday's news. Far more turbos in racing than not (F1, Indy, DP, the list goes on) - even Ford F150's :-)

I think that the NA cars will hold value just because for fuel economy and emissions more and more cars are coming with turbos (like you said about econo cars) and thus NA cars are kind of a dying breed. Porsche Turbos, on the other hand, are pretty far from numb, drive a 997 GT2 or GT2 RS and let us know if you've changed your mind. If you find yourself in the NJ/NY area I'll take you for a ride in mine

I was thinking exactly the same..but MirageJHU will take him for a ride..lets see then about "numb".

However, there is a point, current BMW, Merc diesel-gas etc turbos are indeed numb. Thats probably what he meant. I have never heard anyone saying an F40 is numb (because its turbocharged)

Conclusion of this thread : for the collector, buy 991GT3! It will come with engine that is not matching the chassis,PDK-S experiment,RWS experiment, all topped with the adrenaline of knowing you can go up in flames at any time! What other more " exciting " machine has Porsche produced?!
Keep it many years and you will be rewarded!

If this statement is true, then younger air cooled Pcars will have the most appreciation legs still.
