Don't think you can go wrong with the 997.1 if you want the "analog Porsche" experience with Mezger power.

I'd drive each variant first to get a feel for what you like... Honestly, I like the feel of the 996 better than the 997.1 and 997.2 - but I think the 996 is damn ugly and the 997 is gorgeous...

My compromise was to make a 997.1 my DD, and my dedicated track car the 996 GT3 (yeah - it is THAT good. No nannies!).
