For only your second time on track ever, 2:03 is fast.

11/23 @ Sonoma. See you there!

CFRA 11-24-2013 Sonoma Raceway.

I was unable to obtain a set of Hoosiers for this event and my DD tires (RE-11's) have seen a few too many heat cycles and didn't have much thread left on the rears. The only thing I could get delivered in time that may have been a decent option were Toyo Triple Eights. First time running Toyo R888 DOT Street tires….rather interesting…R6's have definitely spoiled me.

Would have been nice to have a fresh set of RE-11's to run back to back comparison test. The Triple eights are definitely a DD/DE tire, by no means a track tire or TT tire. I do not recall the RE-11's needing inch perfect entry line execution. The Triples do, and if you are sightly off they are very unforgiving. I had to be very, very, precise with my turn-ins, not to mention methodical with my throttle application, both after braking and then while applying throttle through the turn an on exit. The Eights were not "awe inspiring" nor did they offer me any confidence in my vehicle and what the out come would be on each and every turn. Braking points radically shifted as well with these tires, which may have contributed to me being off an inch or two at turn entry. I will say they did improve throughout the day and my confidence did grow. However, I believe that had more with me learning how to drive the vehicle with this rubber compound and not the actual tire. I needed to adapt to their "window" of performance, and once doing so times became more consistent. Jury is out at this point.

As a point of reference: the T8's were 4.0-4.5+ seconds off my R6 times…which put me in a top five range vs an overall possibility. In the end, I snagged third overall for the day on street tires and I drove my vehicle to and from the track. Everything I needed for the day was in the frunk. No truck, no support vehicle, and no crew…just me.

Mooty, Larry was stressed all week long trying to figure out how to prevent me from passing him at the start. However, with street tires on my car he didn't even have to worry about me being a threat….he turned a 144:XX at some point during the day! I was able to get the jump on him at our last TH event and took the victory! Last time at Sonoma we were 0.5 seconds off of each other…but he knows if I can get in front of him at some point, my car can become really wide, very quickly!

First lap qualifying session Turn 11 Mayhem…fortunately everyone made it through without swapping paint samples. YIKES! Keep in mind all four cars in front of me are full blown purpose built race cars and running racing slicks, and their front tires are wider than my rears!

Enjoy!

It's nothing that anyone hasn't done before, but here's my video of my personal best lap time at Sonoma in the spyder on Nitto NT01s from Saturday. 1:52.8. I was happy about it.

The track was very fast compared to our last SP event when it rain so hard on Saturday, I heard the pits and the garages were starting to flood!

First lap of the race trying to hang with the breakaway group. I started P4 and finished P3. Was hoping to catch the Radical and make something happen when we got into traffic but unfortunately my tires started to fall off and I had nothing to fight with when opportunity presented itself.

The TA is a Old School IMSA TransAM car weighing in at 2800lbs and 600HP to the ground. Its just sounded evil!

Just got done watching your video...you could be faster! I see a possible sub 1:51 or at least a 1:51.XX in your near future if not a 1:49.99!!!

Nice job!

PS: Nice to see old school sticks at work..

VID -sucks the 888's sucked. Cool video.

Joe- always nice watching your videos, as for 10 I have the same problem, that wall gets big really fast!! I'm probably going 15mph slower than I should. Congrats on the time I'm coming to get you next season!
