C.J had one as his daily beater if i recall correctly. Spoke highly of it as respectable and reliable transportation.
But he owns a Mazda dealership now so id say the VW is long gone in favor of a dealer demo of the month.

I have 2012 Jetta TDI sport wagon. It is great transportation. Cut our fuel use in half over the Acura Mdx.

I have a Golf TDi hatch. Added H&R Sport springs, an SSK and a flash. Great DD, seamless power for highway commuting. Interior fine after 2 years. No real issues other than a bad window regulator.

I am not really wild about our 2.0 TDI. The DSG delivers ~38mpgs, which is still $200/month. Multi-thousand dollar exhaust problems, etc. Her car. I'm happier in a Chevy Volt these days. They handle pretty well, definitely ride nicer, and make the difference between 38mpg and 30mpg look pointless. The older VW diesels, or sticks, do better.

For the VW I have just started looking a few days ago... Was thinking like an early 2000's model or maybe a Volvo V70. In white.
For the GT3 I am looking for a White 2007 with NAV, Xenon, and would prefer the steel brakes... Catch is I am looking for one with higher miles to bring the price down. Track prep is a bonus, but then it means I don't get to prep the car lol!

Either way I'm really torn between getting the wagon, Golf or a second Touareg. I like the size and finish of the Treg but the MPG on the smaller cars is really attractive. My Treg gets 24-28MPG depending on highway miles and how I drive which is never than 80MPH, I would still get 19MPG towing with steel trailer.
Don't know what to do yet.
To make things worse we just renewed the insurance on the C63 and is almost double the price of the GT2, it's just stupid to pay over 300 a month for insurance on a 40K car.

-I can get ~42 on the highway, in summer. 38 is 50/50 cty/hwy, year round, per the stalk, and what I found people posting at fueleconomy.gov.
-I like and would trust VW group's V-6 diesel, more than the 2.0. Urea systems have been conventional, but the 2.0's complied with new rules, using new stuff.
-Exhuast problems can supposedly be "deleted" away, for $500-1000. Where other makers provide servicable diesel particulate filters (DPFs), VW did not. So as cats can get expensive, so too do DPFs (actually worse). In my case (2009/first year), there were parts change-overs, and they laid a $5,500 exhaust bill on me (86k mi, last time I went to VW). I balked at 25% VW-support, still don't think I need it. 25k later, it runs fine but dash light is on. After a $600 EGR, that eventually was recalled/reimbursement, I'm back at an indie again (P0401 code). Gotta get inspected..
So, I'm not upset about the way it drives. Wife likes it. Nimble, nice highway torque, maybe time for Bilsteins. It's the service economics, out of warranty. Fuel savings over 5yr/107k mi have been ~$3,500, vs 28mpg gas, but the fix for a high pressure fuel pump failure (29k psi!!!) is a scrap engine. The DSG's had their megatronics recalled (free), but the DIY, or service costs on the new dual-clutch units probably won't be possible/cheaper, if they ever go. So far, so good there. But the car has me more $mechanically$ nervous than the GT3.

And I will add a slight twist. We have a 2012 Audi A3 TDI w/sport pkg (and DSG). Probably one fo the best cars we have owned.... Will give you 40-42mpg @ 80 w/air on all day long, and if you hit the lower speeds much higher. We've used it for some long trips (1200+ one-way) and it was outstanding. Has plenty of tq to move you when needed (no lag at all) at any speed. So whether VW version or Audi's they are great.

Wife's car is a 2010 Sportwagen, I love that car!
Simple, fun to drive and great torque that you wont get with any other "economy" car. Last road trip from VA to MI was 50.5mpg over 1800 miles (6-speed which I think do a little better on economy than the DSG).
Beautiful, well finished (I think the 2010's had a trim level that was dumbed down a little the following year), and useful car. She may find the size a bit lacking and the low COG makes the car seem even smaller, sometimes it feels like I fall into it.
I would buy another one, no question.

Burning Brakes
Guys trying to gather some info and reviews on either one of those cars, as I'm thinking about adding it to my household. Lately I find my wife 'stealing' my daily (Touareg TDI) more often than I like for her 'longer' hauls, and also every time she needs to take the dogs, or carry something. I drove the wagon once a while ago, but I wonder how is to live with in the long run. I know fuel economy is great and I have to say that feels good to fill up once every 2-3 weeks (Touareg).

Another thing, the Jetta does not use the urea system but the Passat and T-Reg does.

I have 2 diesels: 2011 Golf TDI and 2011 BMW X5d. Both cars are fantastic with 600 mi highway range. Golf goes 36 mpg in town and 48 mpg on highways, the X5d gets about 21 mpg in town and 28 on the highway. Just drove them both 1,900 mi to our new home. Zero issues on both cars since new.
Wife and I both love the TDI, the drive is great and stiff enough. Handling is super and it's a blast to drive. Torque is great for quick starts, beating Mustangs regularly. Not many options available, which is a pity!
