Default 997.2 GT3 Steering Wheel Recover - Who to use?

Guys,

I have a wheel that needs recovering in Alcantara as it is worn. I am very fussy and short of buying a brand new one does anybody have any recommendations on a top notch recoverer to OEM quality?

I just had mine done by Don at Dallas Custom Steering Wheels as well. I'm very happy with the job and I am picky. I had the 1/16 padding added and the yellow stripe and stitching. He also turned it around in under a week. See the pics below

What cost do you reckon for a standard 997.2 retrim?

You can spec: Added padding, stitching design - color, Alcantara, perf leather, 12 o'clock stripe. Range: IIRC @$450-$550 w/shipping.

+1 on Dallas. I did a .1RS recover with thicker (1/8" pad) and OEM style RS alcantara/stripe and XXX stitching (different from above, matches my OEM XPA wheel). Looks and feels great. Figure ~500. Matches OEM color, stitch, and style perfectly.

I got my wheel back from Dallas Custom and I am really really disappointed, a total waste of $500. The alcantara is puckered most of the way around the stitching and you can feel puckering around the stitch line on the top of the wheel at 10 and 2 o'clock and can feel a gap between the material and the wheel in these spots.

My intention was to get it recovered and then sell it but I feel embarrassed to try and sell it second hand and I reckon I'd only get the same money as before with the worn alcantara at best.

That is not the level of quality I've gotten on 2 wheels. Send it back.

That is no going to happen. I am in Australia and he's blaming me. When I sent the wheel there I said I want it 100% OEM, he then fitted it with extra padding. I told him that I never requested this and then he argued with me that I should have it done because everyone does it, but I said no I want it OEM. He redid it and then came back with this email when I said it wasn't good enough:

"I already told you about the Alcantara work, it needs the extra padding. It would feel and look much better. All of the steering wheel re-upholsters out there do this by hands, so you can't expect it 100% likes OEM which was done by machine. We've done hundred wheels like this and of course everyone of them was added the extra padding, not a single one of them was complaint about the work quality. We can stay in this business for almost 10 years and that's because we know what we are doing."

So he is telling me that he can't do the OEM finish without the extra padding. Basically he can't back his work and is trying to blame me for it. He never said he couldn't do it to the standard I wanted it and I went to great pains to say how it must be of an OEM finish. He is using trimming trick to mask the quality of his work. At no point in our emails sis he give me an caveats about the quality of the finish or work.

Very poor.

Yea, it appears that when you sent the wheel back he popped the stitching, removed the padding, reused the original Alcantara and tied it back up.

Not acceptable in my opinion. I'll bet it will wear in just perfectly though. Give it some time. I'm about to send mine to him for a recover and more padding.
