You're probably going to be fine. I've yet to see a non RS (or non LWF car) have that issue. It's from gearing down really.
How many .1RS's or .1's w/ LWF have you seen with this cam bolt problem?

By "gearing down" do you mean changing the R&P, or simply downshifting?

I just got the similar sound today after five 25min track sessions. towed to dealer, found the following codes:

P0300 missfiring summation fault
P0306 Cylinder 6 missfire detected
P0305 Cylinder 5 missfire detected
P0304 Cylinder 4 missfire detected
P0018 Crankshaft position intake camshaft, bank 2 (signal implausible)
P0346 Camshaft position sensor "A" circuit high bank 2 (signal implausible)
P0347 " " " " " " " " (below limit value)
P0349 " " " " " " " " (no signal)

Spoke to my trusted mechanic back in the US, he mentioned the codes look like a camshaft adjuster failure (without hearing the engine nor seeing the car). Does anyone here have any similar experience with this?

To OP, have you ever found out what the problem was?

Just wanted to throw my two cents into the mix here. I've been down this road twice. 3.6L, 3.8L and now 4.0L engines all suffer from the same problem. Its not the actuators that are at fault. They just happen to be the weak link in the chain. Crank Pulleys and other parts come loose as well.

Those that are telling you that the actuators are the fault do not understand the problem. They are just seeing the result. Locktite will not fix the problem nor will updating the actuators.

PM me for further info as I do not wish to run a foul of the rule of the forum by what could appear to be promoting a company.

Hey m42.

The solution you speak of is being fitted to my 4.2 this week and I believe you're also slated to get one for your 4.0L.

What he's talking about is the torsional harmonic damper I've been harping about. Expect an intro post early next week with pricing, detailed data and lead times.

Engine still sitting on stand waiting for teardown - another engine in front of mine getting rebuilt, my hands are kind if tied so just waiting impatiently.

If you see shavings that's the start of one or more bolts coming out.

Then the noise... Basically bolts scraping against aluminum and also the rattle of the adjuster coming apart is distinct at idle.

So Alex, is there now a change of opinion regarding getting the RS 4.0 clutch w LWFW in the 3.1 if it's not tracked, but could have occasions of agressive downshifts? With this issue showing up, should one opt for the OEM / orginal DMFW setup when a clutch replacement is pending?

Well it doesn't help with the weakness of the design of those cam adjusters no;( It doesn't happen all the time and mostly with tracked cars.

after beginning the teardown, mechanic has told me that metal from the cat (Fabspeed) got sucked into the exhaust port damaging the piston. Results from a google search suggest there was a known problem with some of those cats a few years back and that Fabspeed switched to a different supplier - anyone heard of this?

Yup. My friend had it happen to his Cayman S. Needed a new piston....

so the engine is apart and all 6 pistons/walls have scoring and metal debris from the failed Fabspeed cats. the #6 cylinder was knocking b/c a chunk of metal had lodged near the top of the stroke making the clicking sound. now time for 6 new cylinders, balancing, etc. next step will be to call Fabspeed and see if they will cover any of the repairs

not exactly sure as the original owner had already installed them - it was the performance package of that had the headers/cats/mufflers/BMC air intake/chip

i wasnt aware that exhaust could suck back up into the engine.

Considering you are at the point of new pistons etc, I would be looking into a Sharky 3.9L kit.....

Make the most of the down time.

Engine braking and lifting can cause suck back but how far back exhaust gases flow back in don't know. Mike
