Default Molesting my 4.0

I've decided to start fiddling with a few things. I installed the lithium battery last week. Today I ordered an M&M exhaust and will dump the side mufflers.

I want to paint the lower rockers which are black plastic in OEM spec. For .1 RS cars you could actually order painted rockers from the factory as an option. This was not offered on the .2 or the 4.0 for some reason. Has anyone painted them and if so did they have any problems or have any suggestions ? They get dirty, but the car looks lower and better with them painted.

Headers may be next. Neighbors will love em.

Lower resale value. Leave it alone. If u plan to sell u be asked a lot of stupid stuff about why and did u crash it. I don't see any benefit to augmenting nething on 4.0 period. Can say the same for any gt3 out there. Stock vs modified- stock wins any day. Mike

All true, but I am keeping all of the OEM parts and can make original in a matter of hours. I am not going to do anything that can't be reversed easily.

Besides, I recently decided I'm never selling this car. I don't give a **** what lap times the 991 RS turns. I might buy one of those too if I can't stand it.....but I have settled on the idea that its over, this is the P car people will want next year and 20 years from now.

It's a car, go for it. Museum pieces are for later. Show me an original unmolested E30 M3 still owned by the original owner, or any 25 year old collector car with an original owner. Few and far between because it's boring.

There's no benefit to what mods that u are doing. Your post suggests should I do it? No for me. That's my opinion. I just question why do it for minimal performance gain and cosmetic gain. How many trackdays u planning to run a year? Treat car like a street car which it is-it'll never be a racecar- u be much happier. Mike

Bottom line is to do what makes you happy. Wanna mod your 4.0, do it... It's yours!

^ u never recoup your costs as u bore out to 4.2 liter. How does it make u happy? I don't get it. It'll never beat out a 7 cupcar so what's the point of it? Are u doing sequential at some point too? Mike

With regards to your upgrades, as you say, as long as you keep the original parts..ist OK..

light weight battery and m&m side muffler deletes are great idea. Headers are a waste of money and are overkill.

painted rockers are not going to make the car any cooler then it is. People still stop and stare at these things

The 997.1 crowd sometimes switched to GT2 rockers. But that is all i know about that.

Go for it Dave but IMO don't put anything but a bolt in roll bar not the CS bar. If you have a change of heart and sell the car one day, drilled holes through the galvanized and painted OEM tub will turn away more savy buyers not to mention cause a bigger hit to resale value versus a similar condition/mileage 4.0 with no drill holes in it.

GT3's & 3.8RS are much better/cheaper platforms for Frankensteining.

One never recoups any of the expenses. Best possibility is to get 25 cents on the dollar ... maybe. You do it b/c you enjoy it. For the grand grand majority cars are not an investment.
Regarding beating a 7 cup car, well you're right but at least the GT3/RS with built engine has a license plate and can be enjoyed on the street and track.

Thanks guys. I think tcs is right about the headers being dumb. The side muffler delete motivation really isn't about the power gain or even weight reduction, both clear benefits. I really want to enhance sound a touch and believe the heat load will be mitigated as the sides are huge heat retention devices in a less than ideal area.

As to the rockers, does anybody know if they will just quickly chip or peel ? Maybe that is why the painted option was discontinued ? Dunno.
