.2 GT3 - best value, fewer weaknesses than RS, and just as fast as RS

^^ This + keep your 6GT3 and continue to develop it into the safest (full cage) possible dedicated track car you can afford. If you haven't done a R&P or regear yet, there is a whole other level out there for you to explore in that car.

Get the .2GT3 and keep the $20K+ delta over an RS in your wallet for C&C and occasional track duty to appreciate the differences but then again I am biased as you can see from my avatar.

+1 You have addressed all the problems. .2 RS still has clutch issues and the gearbox has been more problems than the earlier models. IF I was going to upgrade I would go with the plain old .2GT3 for more performance or the .1RS for the looks but no improvement over what you have now.

OP, if you want fun and a new challenge have you considered a Spyder or CR? My bone stock CR is a dream to drive anywhere and I'm not much slower on my local tracks than I was in my .2GT3. Insane fun trying to chase my old lap times and I'm definitely on par with most of the 991s running Solo in DEs.

I suggest you give one a drive! It's a big mental step to go 'down' to a 987 but a couple of GT3 owners have both. These are seriously fun cars with a very purist demeanor- no PASM and TC turns off with one button. If you want a new challenge this would be worth exploring.

It's not clear to me what you want. Your gt3 is so nicely set up and track-focused that only a Cup would improve along those dimensions.

As others already suggested, resist the itch and keep the good thing you have going. For experiencing something new and more streetable (your 6GT3 with those springs is probably 99% track-only) ADD a 09+ model Boxster or Cayman S to your stable. The combo will still cost you less than an RS or a 7.2GT3 and will be fitting more purposes better, IMO. (Speaking from experience as I have a Boxster S and a 6GT3). Nothing compares to a 987/981 S on a curvy mountain road and they could be a blast on the track, as well, with just a set of NT01's and track alignment. The 987 Boxster S would only need the Euro GT3 seats as it comes with a rollbar stock.

Just my $0.02

EDIT: Ok, two more cents, consider investing in the driver (yourself) by getting some coaching or signing up for Skip Barber racing school and maybe even doing their race series. How close are you from extracting everything that your 6GT3 can give? Most people are surprised how much is still there.

Default Thanks everyone!

As usual you guys offer up some great ideas!I have been turning around the idea of a Cayman and I do get some pro coaching regularly.I love the way the new Cayman looks however I think the suggestion was to look for a Cayman R is the feeling that the "R" is more car than say a 2014 Cayman S?

All 09+ 3.4L DFI engines are great, proven to be bulletproof, and pretty much the same. There's nothing that the 987 R has that you couldn't achieve with a few tweaks on an 987 S. The 981 platform offers wider wheelbase and front/back but gets rid of the 987's hydraulic steering and replaces it with electronic. You can find a 987 R with the carbon bucket seats which are not available for 981. The 981 looks better than 987, personally.

Keep the 996 GT3 (most fun of all the GT3 I have driven). Add 2014 Cayman S with just the Sport suspension and PTV, a $68k car, and better than the 987.2 Cayman R.

Keep it. Still give fits to later gen gt3's : ). Only thing I would upgrade if track only is a 6 cup. On the street gt3's are boring. 7 is definitely the better street car. Mike

Default Cayman 981 questions

Man! By far the feeling I get is keep the 996 GT 3!Some folks do lean towards the 997.2 GT3RS but what is it thy isn't as much fun as the 6-GT3?
Regarding the 981 Cayman has anyone put a 991 engine in one yet ?What is PVT?Is there an LSD option? TIA HOM

Or get a 4.0 and get it over with, keep forever.
Maybe get a 991 when you get too old to drive well and fast.

Tom, what exactly is it that you want out of a newer car? You are already faster (both car and driver) than 95% of the cars on the track. And I can say that since I have been running with you for the last 7 years. The 6 you have right now is not something that you are going to get much for in a sale so the cost delta to jump to a 7.2RS is going to be in the order of 100K+. For what end? If it's b/c you want something newer for when you are around town, then pick up a Carrera/CarreraS/Turbo for tooling around town and then the 6 becomes your 100% track car and you can do those last few things that your car really needs (full cage, better aero, gearing). It's what Randy did.....6GT3 with the "LVDell package" and 7Turbo for tooling around
