NT-01 on the street question....

Three Wheelin'
Taking my RS up to Buttonwillow this afternoon. Had rented a Uhaul trailer to tow it the 200 miles up there but I coudn't get the car on the trailer to the point that I was comfortable.
I have NT-01's that probably have 2-3 track days. Can someone reassure me that they will be okay to drive a couple hundred miles each way plus whatever track mileage I can do in a day?
Thanks!

After almost crashing towing my 911 on a Uhaul car trailer. The car just had too much weight out back and as soon as I got on the interstate it started fishtailing. I had to drive 25 on the shoulder to get it to the next exit. Tried to back it on the trailer - no go - kept spinning the boards under the tires.
BEWARE towing 911's on a car not properly balanced and insufficient tongue weight.
Ended up droving on my NT-01's to Talledaga, did a track day and drove back. No worries.

- the UHaul worked very well for me and my Q7 (towed from Toronto to Watkins Glen)
- my guess is that I had it much further forward than you using the technique I described above (2x8 with 2x4 underneath creating ramp to get front edge of car over the metal trailer edge
- you have to zoom in and you can kind of see the wood under the front tires

If u want to carry track wheels, I think on gen 1,you can get a roof rack. Gen 2 doesn't have it. Another option in the future if you are concerned about tires.
I was gonna rent a trailer but I think my x5 can tow 5k.. So I would need light alum trailer... Most uhaul ones are beefy and heavy from the ones I see.
Is q7 tow capacity better than e70 x5 50i?

q7 tow capacity is 6600 i believe
as long as you do a good job of securing the car to the trailer and the trailer to the tow hitch all is good
i would climb the alps with this setup but I would let someone else go down the other side
I'm guessing the trailer was 2k, my car is 3200, add 4 tires some luggage, etc and it was probably 6k - on the highway with the diesel it was no problem at all

nt01 is my defacto street tire on the 3.8

used to run V710's as 'summer'/track tires...never an issue, never found an issue with HC'ing them out, put quite a number of miles on them including a lot of hard/serious track miles...

Roof rack is a horrible idea. Badness waiting to happen.
I've been through numerous sets of NT01's. While I don't drive to the track on them, I have been short distances at high speed to get fuel. I don't find them noisy at all.
R888's on the other make a horrific noise on the interstate. Enough that you will want to puncture your ear drums with pencils to make it stop.
It is what it is... So if you have to drive on them then you have to...
However, be warned. These are much softer than regular street tires. So they like to pick up stuff. Like screws and other small metal sharp objects. Not a fan of patching track tires.
I got a half inch crew in a brand new MPSS a couple weeks ago. New like it had 100 miles on it new. Picked it up on the way to the track. Unluckily, or luckily depending on how you look at it, it was dead center in the tread and since the tires were so new the tread block was deep enough that it didn't puncture the tire. Phewww.
You guys should look into a tire trailer like I use. Cheap, easy to store, simple, and you won't have to deal with the "what if's" of running R comps to and from the track.

Just finished a 100 mile drive for my driving event at the Ridge tomorrow. Running NT01/RA1 combo which I will leave on between events as well. I agree that the 888s are loud but the Nitto's are fine.

I know one thing with regards to the NT01 and I found out the hard way. When I installed my first two sets I put a couple of heat cycles on them on the street before taking taking them to the track and I got 33 and 28 sessions (20 min each) before I corded them. The last set, I put them on, took off the stickers, and drove on them straight to the track. Well, 15 sessions later I'm seeing cords. Same car, same track. This tells me it's pretty important to get a heat cycle or two on them before track use in order to get the max life out of them.
