Are expired harnesses garbage?
Hi All,
Have some expired harnesses that came with my RS, I've replaced them as the blue wasn't doing it for me. They are expired last year, so I wouldn't use them on the track, but are they garbage? No idea what they're good for, a simulator?

In Rally, we have the requirement of SFI or FIA rated belts. SFI are good for two years and FIA for 5 years. Both source (as far as I can tell) the same webbing from the same factories so the only thing that makes the FIA (Schroth, etc) last longer than SFI (G-force, Simpson) is the tag and certification paid for by the manufacturer. You can get belts re-webbed, but last I checked it wasn't cost effective vs. new. Give them to your local jeep/rock crawler buddies. Us them to hold gear into place on your trailer. Always replace harnesses if they have been involved in an accident with enough force to stretch them out.

Most clubs allow expired belts to be used in Auto X and DE. Chicago Region PCA never checks the dates on the belts for it's DE track events - but you should check with your local club. There is definitely a difference in the webbing used in SFI belts and FIA belts. Most FIA belts use a Polyester webbing (Schroth has theirs made specifically for them) while SFI belts generally use a Nylon webbing. The differences are as follows. Polyester has a much lower strength degradation than Nylon over time. After 24 months the Nylon webbing has approximately 20 % of its original strength left while the Polyester webbing still has approximately 60%. This degradation is due to light (UV). This is the primary reason why FIA belts are good for 5 years while SFI belts are only good for 2 years. An FIA belt has an FIA tag that reads Good Thru and the year, so it is good thru 12/31 of the year. While the SFI tag has a month and year punched in their tag - this is the date of manufacture so you goo our 2 years from that date.
Polyester webbing is also more resistant to acids like battery acid plus it doesn't absorb moisture as much as Nylon does. So if you race in an open car where they can get wet or you race in a high humidity environment Polyester is much better. Polyester also has a much better force/elongation ratio then Nylon thus giving a much more predictable stretch during an incident.
Most FIA approved belts are more expensive than SFI belts - but they're good for over twice as long. As the saying goes - you generally get what you pay for.
