Default GT3 no wing? Aerodynamic issues?

Ok fellas,

Sorry in advance. But how much is the famed GT3 wing about show and how much is it about go?

True aerodynamic benefit, or marketing aesthetics to emulate cup car?

For example, look at the 997 Turbo, similar HP, granted, slightly heavier, but an understated rear wing.

Once again, forgive my ignorance, but I had to ask the GT3 owners.

What do you guys think?

Depends on the model but yes, they serve a purpose rather than being just for show. IIRC, the 997.2 gt3 wing generated about 120 kg of downforce, the RS about 160-170 kg ...

@ 186mph those numbers

@ 100mph (more realistic high speed corner), its a lot less. Square function and all that.

Both correct! Forgot to mention those figures were at near terminal speed although the 997.2 cars were not prone to lift at 120mph according to the Sportauto testing carried out IIRC... Previous models were getting lift since before that speed...

What AoA on the wing for these numbers?

Good question Jenner but I don't recall Porsche ever quoting. Would assume it would be at the oem setup angle of 7o for the GT3 and similar for the RS...

Since I've been digging for such data, this is what I have noted:
"For the RS 4.0 the AoA increased from 6.8 to 9.0°"
I assume this was a 3.8 to 4.0 comparison.

The 4.0 did at those little diagonal wedges on the front side under lights for additional downforce. Perhaps this helped.
