Default Oil Pressure Question

What should oil pressure be on 11 RS. At idle I am at 1 bar, however at steady speed and acceleration it pretty much pegs and stays at 5 bar until I back off. No check engine lights, oil and water temp good. Just noticed in my buddy's 12 CS that he stayed in the 3 bar+ range.

Normal?? or a problem.

My car does the same thing, idles about 1.5 and pegs over pretty much over 3.5.

Completely normal. That's just how a dry sump engine reads as it maintains positive pressure in the oil system.

On the track (which is basically always above 4k) my GT2 hangs between 49 and 51 psi.

Basically you should be looking for 1 bar per 1k revs. The gauge may top out at 5, but if you look at actual CANBUS data it peaks at around 8 bars around redline.

What you say is what causes me concern. At 3K rpms, which is around cruise speed, then I should be at 3 bars, not 5.

Here's a video of me at the track last weekend. I am collecting data via a Solo DL on the CAN bus. My oil pressure (in psi) hovers between the mid 40s and 51. The dasbboard gauge was between 4 and 5, so I assume it's a psi/10 measurement.

Mine does what yours (the OP) does. I too was worried as all my previous cars did the 1 bar per 1k inrevs, my 07 GT3 is pegged at 5bar pretty much as soon as i pick up the throttle. I think its perfectly normal for these cars.

Sorry not meant to cause you distress--the 1bar / 1k revs is more at the higher end of the rev range. Under street conditions I don't think oil pressure is relevant unless you're concerned about a catastrophic failure.

1 bar per 1k rpm is approx min's anything better is good. Engine controls max pressure by the oil pressure relief system so unless its minus 50*C and you rev the nuts off it from stone cold you will be ok!

Idle pressure minimum should be 1.2-1.5 bar if lower get the oil changed and stick with the recommended OEM Mobil 1.

CRex,

Very interesting... Do you know where that pressure reading is taken from? A pressure of 8 bar seems high but may be taken before the relief valve and the crank/engine lubricating system i.e used for the variable valve timing. ~6 bar is the usual hot max for most engines otherwise problems can arise.

This explains it pretty well. Logically the sensor pickup is after the main oil pump, and physically it's located next to the right camshafts. The safety/relief valve kicks open beyond some 10 bars IIRC so that's not gonna matter in this discussion, but for completeness' sake it's #3 in the diagram as an escape route after the main pump.
