The S65 in the current M3 is 35-40lbs lighter (total is about 445lbs) than the S54 that was in the previous gen E46 M3, and about the same as the S52 in the E36. The engine is not the issue.....there are other atrocities committed mostly by bean counters to lower material costs and marketing folks who added content to widen market appeal...same ol bs.

More interesting is the move to the less expensive, more customer friendly, 4.4L V8. BMW wants to start selling more GT customer cars.
The only series it will be able to run in is ALMS. It's has a ton of waivers - so won't run in other ACO sanctioned races. Not only does it have a v-8 that the road going cars doesn't have but they have lengthened the chassis as well. Porsche is in the process of developing the 991 to increase it's wheel base, while BMW has achieved it through performance waivers. There's almost no similarity to the road going version. It has to drive Ferrari crazy to have developed the best GT car and have to deal with all of these waivers given to competitors such as BMW and Aston Martin. Fortunately we should see a great fight between Porsche and Ferrari in the next several years

It's definitely not helping attract/keeping enthusiasts....aka me. I think this is my last new BMW (e90M3). What they should do is go into the prototype class and run a turbo diesel - then at least I might be convinced that there is trickle down tech getting into their cars.
