Default How much is CPO worth? > $8k?

I am looking at two 997 GT2s. One is CPO'd and the other is not (otherwise they are basically similar). The non-CPO car is more than $8.5k less. Normally, I'd prefer to CPO but $8.5k is too much to ignore.

Any thoughts?

CPO. 8.5k is nothing when you look under the hood and find Range 4 overrevs, fried clutch, gearbox, etc.

Why I had the impression CPO cost/year was something like $1500 !!

2 years = $3000.

Guess many factors play into calculating costs, like model year, mileage, etc!

OR could be that the actual CPO does not cost $8000, just dealer price hike!

If a dealer does it right, their cost is a little more than a couple grand and whatever it takes to get the car in shape. They can easily put another 4 grand in the car to get it to CPO standards. eg couple of tires, fluids, services, etc.

CPO should be worth and easy $7k extra IMO. Also, peace of mine is worth?

Surprised at the responses! Figured the $8k difference would be way too wide.

BTW, I am not implying that the dealership is charging 8k for CPO, just that they're view of the total value is 8k more, of which some is CPO. My view is that the cars are, for all purposes, identical so to me the entirety of the 8k is CPO.

When I bought mine from the local dealer we discussed the CPO process. They said it would be $2K (their cost is just slightly under that) plus any work that would be required to make it eligible to CPO. I had to get NOTHING done so it was only $2K extra on top of the price. My guess is they had some work to get it up to snuff. This is why I am VERY LEARY when a dealer tells me that can't or won't CPO a car. If they can't or won't get it to CPO, then you are left to figure it out on your own which can be very expensive.

FYI....I just paid them for 2 hours of labor to do a thorough PPI on the car to let me know if and what would be needed. Worth the investment.

Absolutely! I would be very worried if a dealer won't CPO a car.

And make no mistake, just because a car is CPO'd does NOT mean that it is flawless. You still need a thorough PPI done independently by somebody you trust. There are many dealers that CPO a car without looking it over and have no idea (or intentionally cover up issues) what the car has lurking.

The non-CPO car is not a car Porsche refuses to CPO. It's just a private party sale. I am assuming that private party cars cannot be CPOd after the fact. If they can, then this may be a good option.

You got that right my friend. All dealers are not created equal.

997 GT2 - so you're spending about $100-135K? I'd get the CPO.

Tough to put a value on a CPO. My CPO was worth close to $10K in warranty repairs. Others have never had to use it. Does bring some peace of mind for 2 years.

An aftermarket warranty is also an option, I suppose.

So if you're purchasing a car from a private party, with existing remaining warranty, can you take it to a dealer get it CPO'd after the PPI?

Get a PPI on the less expensive car...if it checks out I would buy it.

I just bought my 997.1 GT3 from a private party and had a dealer do the CPO. All in cost for the CPO was $2,500 - well worth it. I would see if you can find a local dealer that will CPO it for you.
