I had a 2009 Carrera S with the 385hp 9A1 engine. I now have a 2012 Carrera GTS that comes with the 408hp X51 package on the 9A1 engine. For the cost of the X51 package there is not much if any performance difference. The GTS came with this and was a deal with this car but I would not pay to add the X51 option.
Also to me a Carrera S is not even in the same league as a GT3 RS 3.8 and 4.0 and same for a Ferrari F430.

I had an '07 GT3 and I've owned a manual 430 for four years - no regrets. The GT3 is a great car, and the better track car, but the 430 is the more exciting road car. It looks special, it's better balanced, it sounds more aggressive and it's noticeably quicker/torquier (though the GT3 sounds good too and is plenty quick). The 430 is a reliable road car and the maintenance is reasonable. Mine has had a couple of minor issues (faulty ediff control valve and hvac ecu, both covered under warranty) but nothing major. The shifter can be a bit balky, but it works well when shifted quickly at high rpms. The flat crank and light flywheel give near instant throttle response (touch the throttle and the car reacts) and quick throttle blips when downshifting.
You can't go wrong with either car. I only got rid of the GT3 because I wanted the 430. Other than a bit too much built-in understeer, I really enjoyed the GT3.

I have owned a few Ferraris, including the F40, and a few Porsches, including my current orange 997.1 RS. As incredible as the F40 was, I think the RS is even better. This is truly an amazing car, and I gottta say, it sure attracts a bunch of attention!! Every time I drive it, my beautiful girlfriend tells me I have a giant grin on my face.

All cars mentioned are fantastic, but the GT3 is the one that never grows old! The 991 would make a great daily driver, but a soft toy. It is a great car but does not nearly involve the driver as much as the other 2. The 430 will not leave you wanting, but does not give you the thing that only a GT3 can, pure reliable excitement not to mention a GT3 with 30,000 miles is still a hot commodity!

I agree with you about how special the GT3 is. And I'm going to brace myself for the onslaught that is sure to follow... But, won't I feel a bit like a tool in 10 years (when I'm in my 50's) driving around with a big wing on the back of my street car?

I agree. I know the wing serves its purpose on the track but I wish it wasnt present on the street. Makes you feel like a 16 year old in a bad way.

While I have not driven an F40, I was fortunate to drive its predecessor, the 288GTO, on a couple of occasions back when they were new in 1985. How the F40 can even be mentioned in the same sentence as the 997.1 GT3 is beyond me.

The 997.1 RS is better than a Ferrari F40? Are you kidding?
