Default Porsche 961 Confirmed

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/porsche...-961-confirmed

Porsche has given its Ferrari 458 Italia beater the green light, and it's set to be called the 961.

Porsche CEO Matthias Muller has finally confirmed that the company is working on a rival for the Ferrari 458 Italia – as Auto Express reported in May last year.

Muller wants to bridge the gap between performance models such as the 911 GT2 RS and the upcoming £672,000 918 Spyder hybrid supercar. The perfect car to slot into that space is a mid-engined supercar that Muller envisages will cost around £250,000.

Porsche hasn’t confirmed a name for the newcomer, but rumours suggest it could be badged 961. It will borrow technology from the 918 Spyder, including a lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic monocoque chassis.

Our exclusive image reveals a look inspired by the 918 Spyder and the Panamera Sport Turismo concept that made its debut at the recent Paris Motor Show.

Power is likely to come from the 4.6-litre V8 engine used in the 918 Spyder. Expect around 570bhp and a 0-62mph time of just over three seconds – figures to match those of the 458 Italia and McLaren 12C.

The new supercar forms part of Porsche’s plans to sell 200,000 cars a year in 2018, but the majority of those sales will come from high-volume models such as the Macan small SUV and the next-generation Cayenne and Panamera families.

To me this makes a lot more business sense than the 918. But in ten years maybe I won't feel this way...

no chance this is ready before the GT3, GT3RS, GT2, etc all go through their 991 runs. wouldn't make business sense. therefore I think it will be 2016 Model Year

Use the 4.6L V8 engine based back to the RS Spyder, minus the 918 Hybrid system?

Okay, Porsche, my deposit check is ready.

Very similar to the dream I had in June.

"In my dreams of the future, there is not another 911 GT car. First comes the production run of the 918 Hybrid Spyder in late 2013, with it’s combined 770 HP. Then they release a stripped version, without the electric motors, batteries, rear-axle steering and carbon-fiber shell. It goes down to the bare bones 530 HP mid-engine, no frills level and they call it a 918 GT3. Awhile later they add some bling, HP and track goodies, and call it a 918 GT3RS.

I can feel it. The thoughts of a 918 Cup excite me."

Agree.

Yet still think Porsche AG, some time from now (say 15 years) will be left with little option (design wise) but return to the original 911 shape of 80's and 90's. The distinctive muscle/classic look of earlier times, made Porsche the legend it is today.

More softening of lines (color red the 961, and U can mistake it for F430). Won't bode well for future of Porsche marque.

Unlikely. £250k equates to roughly $400k and that's before options. 911 isn't going away anytime soon.
