There won't be a customer 991RSR til 2014, so what's a team principal to do?
There's a rumor that the 991 RSR will be campaigned/developed in the WEC in 2013 by the factory. Also P Long tweeted not to read too much into the statements made by Flying Lizards and Porsche Motorsport.

Even the 991 chassis will have been around for a couple of years by the time the GT3 debuts. The car will be an evolution of the current GT3 and 991; it's not like it will employ completely untried technology. I don't really see what there is to worry about.
+1

I have talked to a few pro drivers locally that took 991S PDK cars out on track.....they love them and claim thonce set up properly will give a 4.0 hell

I cany wait for a PDK track car......I will haveto perfect my finger flicking shift like rad

Contend from another site.

Porsche confirmed they are indeed stopping the 997 GT3 RSR program, and will not be offering a new car for 2013. They will support teams that wish to run the existing car in 2013, but will focus their efforts on the brand new 991-based race car for the 2014 season.

This starting jiving with what I was thinking… until I got to the following part of the statement:

In North America, the development partner helping to design, engineer and implement improvements in the current 911 RSR race car has been Flying Lizard Motorsports in the GT class of the ALMS. This partnership now is discontinued.

Hmmm- I've been looking at picking up another .2 RS since selling mine. Now it's winter. Question is- is it worth it to wait and go for the new GT3? Even if PDK is great on the track, I'd still argue manual is more fun on the street.

+1 Word is factory drivers are raving about the stability of the new 991 Cup platform. Tick tock.

Looking forward to the haters doing the typical about-face.

In Europe, there was a similar partnership with Felbermayr Racing - which has ended as well. All development focus is now on the 991.

No suprise, especially with the recent FIA/ACO GT unification of the GT3/GTE regs. Porsche is making sure all their race cars will be inline with sporting regs for 2014 and beyond for both FIA/ACO and ALMS/Grand Am.

It's actually the perfect time to take "off" a year, since 2013 in ALMS is really just going to be going through the motions. Hell, even BMW wants to quit racing the M3 and use the Z4 GT3 for 2013.

One look at the Blancpain Endurance series, and it's pretty clear where GT racing in the U.S. needs to gravitate towards IMO.

It's already in for a while.

All front runners Grand AM Porsches run RSR Tranny and a few suspension parts.
Those cars are FAR from stock Cups.

get a 3.8RS to keep
get a 991rs to abuse.
one is old school not to be made anymore
the other is new and will keep on improving.
i have no illusion that 991RS will blow the door, wing and hood off my 38 and 40.

What it really means is that Porsche is behind with R&D on the new RSR for 2014 and they need all the resources now! Bad planning by management for sure...
Porsche is on schedule (actually ahead). Same happened with the 996-997 RSR, and even when it did come out, people still raced the 996 because the 997's were late coming out and the 996 was still a front runner.

Z06 (Z07 to be exact) is quicker around Laguna than pretty much everything except an ACR. Including a GT2 RS driven by a factory Porsche driver. Porsche is behind.

A 997.2 was just that, a 997. Engineering a engine and gearbox to put into a refreshed model and building a whole new model are two different things. Beside, the 997 was barely an engineering difference over the 996 so most of that tech going in was old. Hence how far the 911 has fallen relative to competition. Old tech (from the 90's).

Grand-Am cups are narrow body RSR's. They have pretty much everything an RSR has on them.
