After just completing a 4 day Porsche class at Barber in AL. I honestly do not see the need for anything more than the 991 S, the car with or without PDK can be driven at crazy speeds. I am not an expert driver but that car can do more than 99% of people driving. Yes a little more HP could always be used if you had a high speed track, but at Barber I dont think it is necessary.

Its a really nice car, just need to get used to the looks. The Panamara GTS was also a joy to drive, love the sound.

It's the basic GT3 formula (lightweight, rear drive), but the incremental gains over the Carrera S will come through tech, programming, and a bit more hp, rather than a bespoke powerplant and gearbox with a true link to the race cars. People don't buy the GT3 for outright performance numbers, so whether or not it hits the marks that people expect (of course it will) is irrelevant and doesn't automatically qualify it as a worthy successor.
It will be a worthy successor after one yanks the paint off your GT3RS.

Given that the 991S comes with MPSS, some MPSC might make this car as fast as a 3.8 RS. That's just nasty. Maybe Porsche is just going to make the car so beast that we can't help but buy one.

Those of you that don't actually really follow sports car racing and are putting down the 991 or 997.2 Carrera S/GTS because of the engine need to do a little research. The 9A1 engine just won the Rolex Grand Am Conti series Championship with BGB Motorsports in their Carrera GTS. Yep the 9A1 is staring to have some racing history.

Has the 9A1 block won Le Mans outright? No. Will it? Doubtful.

Why did the GT2 RS return to the Mezger bock after they already had the Turbo S? Surely the brand-new ultra bad-*** 9A1 3.8 Liter engine would be a better choice than the older, heavier 3.6 Liter Mezger block?

To me, the 'one race' that ultimately will clear all doubt and make the name of the 9A1 engine is the one and only -- Le Mans.

When the 9A1 wins Le Mans (especially over Ferrari) and brings home the class trophy, it will then have its pedigree like the Mezger in the history book of Porsche Le Mans race cars.

Agreed. But don't be surprised if/when that happens it is with a Flat 8 derived from the current 9A1. VW loves economies of scale.

In the mean time, I think the 9A1 will be finding its way to the podium sooner rather than later.

The 9A1 has to start somewhere. Who knows what is up Porsche's sleeve and maybe the new GT3 and racing versions of Porsche cars will have a derivative of the 9A1. I truly hope Porsche gets back into winning sports car races in a huge way and dominates raves like LeMans and Sebring. The current crop of competition race cars have surpassed the 997 and its Mezger a few years ago...it's time for the next step from Porsche to return to it's winning ways with newer and better technology.

if this is how fast the 991S is, the 991 GT2 and GT3RS should be faster than the 918. haha

Anyone know what tires were used for this 991 lap?

Yes, absolutely agree. When the 991 wins its class(es) at Le Mans and other sports car races, demonstrating excellent overall reliability, and when they put that engine in a street car, I'll consider buying one.

Sports car racing is not all about hp - the GT3 RS 4.0, which uses the GT3 RSR crank, produces more hp than the RSR due to the race car's restrictors. The Mezger engine is, of course, heavy compared to the 9A1 (and the Ruf V8), so a lighter engine, moved farther forward in a car with a wider track and longer wheelbase, along with all the other chassis advances, will hopefully make for a competitive car.

The flat 8 is mentioned a lot on forums, but I've never heard it hinted at by Porsche. I hope they make one - would be a great way to extend the longevity and competitiveness of the hi-po 911s in a world where factory Mustangs can outclass the GT2 RS in peak hp.

Am I the only one who doesn't really care about the "ski is falling" mezger demise? Believe me, I have a great appreciation for the engine - but I drive the GT3 simply because it gets my juices flowing, not because the engine is a 40 y.o. design with history.
