Default What is this grinding noise at startup?

I only notice this when the car has been sitting for any length of time. It's a horrible "grinding" sound. You can hear the sound I am referring to just after start up at the 19 sec mark just 2 sec after startup.

Any idea what the heck that sound is?

Dell old habits die hard my friend.

I'm moving this to the 7 section.

I can't hear the sound from where I am, but will try to later.. unless someone else solves the mystery first.

Best

John

I have the same thread in the 7 section as well. Figured same engine so both 6 and 7 forum would get me to an answer.

Ah okay my bad then, I'll kill the second one and leave the redirect in the 6GT3 forum.

Without hearing it, I think that you are referring to the "normal" sound of the valvetrain, chain tensioners or variocam when deprived from oil.

It's odd though as I don't ever recall this in the 6.

Commonly called the GT3 "death rattle."
It's "normal."
Still present to a certain extent in the 2010 engine.

U mean that varoom grinding sound at startup? I have that on my 6 if sitting for long periods. Had that since day 1 or ie when it was parked for long periods. I don't mind the marbles in can sound(I think that sounds great) but that varoom not so much. Mike

Welcome to the clatter club. Although my rattle seems to happen just a little faster than your tape... maybe a second. And yes -- only after it's been sitting a little.

Man -- the first time I heard it ...

Love these machines.

Haha, I guess it's been so long since I've actively driven my 3. WIth the move recently the car has been in storage for a month or so, I figured it would be VERY pronounced this time. I was right. I used to only hear it once in a while if I didn't drive it at least once or twice a week.

Geez, these cars can make you paranoid sometimes! I guess that's why I ran bypass pipes on the 6-3. I never heard a thing

Think this happens on the white ones most commonly. Something about their paint being lighter or something. Don't know how that affects the engine though.

Both my .1s did this after sitting for a few days. Normal.

.2 3.8's do it too. When my wife or friends hear it, I usually get "WTF is wrong with your car?!?"

... between the occasional smoke, rattle and squealing brakes the locals think my car is a pile of crap and always ask, "How much do those cars cost? My Honda never does that!"
