Default Clearplex Windshield Protection Film

My friend and fellow poster DJN (Doug) gave me a heads-up about Clearplex windshield film. I'd tried a protective film before and it was a nightmare to install and visibility was terrible. But I trust Doug and ordered the film.

The film is cut specifically to shape (preform) already which makes life soooo easy. I opted for the install kit and wax as well.

Install was straightforward and took me approx 40 minutes as I was being slow and meticulous. Now that it has been on for a few weeks and I've used the car at track events I can say, I'll install it on any new car/windshield for sure.

Optical distortion is very minimal and the film saves the windshield from the inevitable peppering of rock rash.

There you go, my 10 second review and recommendation

http://clearplex.myshopify.com/colle...roducts/porche

Here is the official marketing info:

"CLEARPLEX®...THE BEST WINDSHIELD PROTECTION YOU'LL NEVER SEE
ClearPlex® is the first and only optically-clear protection film for auto windshields. This patented product absorbs the impact of standard road hazards.
Significantly reducing the occurrence of rock chips, pitting and bull'seyes.
Leaving the glass in pristine condition.A multi-layer film that adheres to the windshield, but can be removed at the end of its useful life.

IMPACT AND SCRATCH RESISTANT
ClearPlex® is designed to take what the road dishes out. Impacts which shatter unprotected glass leave only a minimal pin-point on the film, preserving its optical clarity. Like glass, ClearPlex® is scratch-resistant and stands up to everyday abrasions, such as windshield wipers.

REDUCE HEAT, UV & GLARE
ClearPlex® features UV stabilizers which reduce the amount of heat in your vehicle and helps prolong the life of your interior. With its polarized finish, the film can help reduce glare. Thermally Fitted To Your Windshield Depending on the windshield, installing ClearPlex® can take less than a half an hour by a certified installer. The film is thermally fitted to every curve of the windshield, forming a bond with the glass.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY, PROVIDING A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO WINDSHIELD REPAIR
Avoids the unnecessay pollution of broken windshield glass in landfills.

SAFETY FOR VEHICLE OCCUPANTS AND PROTECTING THE VALUE OF YOUR AUTOMOTIVE INVESTMENT
The windshield is responsible for about 20% of a vehicle's structural integrity. An intact windshield can prevent a vehicle from roof from collapsing in an overturn, and it can help to keep passengers inside the car. ClearPlex® film can help to preserve a windshield in an accident, thereby protecting the vehicle occupants and the vehicle itself."

+1

Had it since April 2010.
Lasts better and is stronger than tear offs.

I replace it every 15-20 track days, but never had to replace a windshield.

Had to get my windshield chip/crack fixed after last day at Road America. Was wondering if there was something like this on the market. This looks like a good idea. Thanks for the heads up savvyboy.

Hi all,

Thanks for the reminder and comments savyboy !

FYI there will be a full article/review of this useful product in the next issue (#205) of Excellence. My articles are way in the back of the book, so look carefully.

You should be getting it in the mail soon, or it at your favorite store after Oct 1.

Cheers!

Good find. I didn't even notice it on Peter's car when he was at Road America. Definitely a thing to get. Thanks!

Have Clearplex on my C4S since may 2011 and my gt3 for one month now. Helps with preventing spidering from rocks wherever they come from. Piece of mind IMO. Small amount of maintenance required. 3M glass cleaner and q month sealant.

Does this apply well to windshields that are not quite pristine?

How do you know when this needs to be replaced and how long on average does it last?
Thanks

Yes, no problem......it just needs a good cleaning before hand.....I give you the tour of mine at Willow as well as some pointers for the DIY.

I have used ClearPlex since 2009, I had one on for 3 seasons, including plenty of track time, but no winter driving. It will pit slightly with road abrasion, you'll know when to swap it out. I'd say 2 years is a good average and 3 with extra care. See the Excellence artcles for some tips on care.

Cheers!

Had it on 2 cars and don't track without it. Same durability as mentioned by Doug.

Thanks guys. I've had a new windshield in the garage for two years and might just install it now.
