GT3 VS GT3

Drifting
Absolutely not.
And to not get into a yes/no discussion without end I will just show you:
Spa Francorchamps, mk1 GT3rs with shorter gearing
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Euj6xisJNDs
Same track, mk2 GT3 with standard gearing
http://vimeo.com/21619785
(both cars on semi-slick tyres, but not on the same trackday)
I only counted upshifts, because some people skip gears when downshifting (5-3) and others dont.
Result, 1 lap, started counting from the La Source hairpin:
GT3RS : 13 upshifts
GT3: 8 upshifts
The delta between the two becomes even bigger when counting downshifts too. example: for each part where the GT3 can stay in 3rd and the RS has to do 3 - 4 - 3 that are 2 extra shifts for the RS and 0 for the GT3
so IMHO very likely.

FYI I can show you vids from at least 3 other tracks with the same outcome. He is a good friend of mine and we do a lot of trackdays together. Even in straight line acceleration it is not always faster if you have a long straight (going from 2nd to 5th for instance). It really depends on the track and the specific corner if you win with shorter gearing or not.
Why you have to throw in the above argumentation and make fun of a statement I never wrote I have no idea...

the lap you saw of the .1 RS is a 2:46. Not many people drive a 997.1 RS in 2:46 on Spa using semislick tyres. Not to say its pretty bloody fast.
My personal best there is 2:51. When comparing the data the biggest differences are in braking and corner speeds, not in acceleration.

No apology needed - you win
Stock gearing is superior if you say so and provide video evidence
Court adjourned
I know what's faster regardless of shift count

And my video evidence would be pretty bad in proving stock gearing is better because the car with shorter gearing does a better lap time.

I have just a Copans 4.0 r/p in my 6. I only use 3rd and 4th(only 5th at thill at longest straight) on the tracks I go to which are thill/ sears point and not anymore ls due to their ridiculous sound limits. Stock gearing I have to use 2/3/4. With PJ's short r/p and shorter gearing as well u have good usable trq -great for passing scenarios. Mike

I inferred from your posts that stock gearing was superior because you had to shift less, otherwise why mention it?
Clearly I missed your obvious point that shorter gearing would require more shifts
Thank you for setting me straight

You said: ""Changing gears twice as much... Unlikely IMHO or you are tracking under 4000 rpm."
I just showed you it is not unlikely, that's all.

I thought I just said you were right
Just so we are on the same page
YOU ARE RIGHT
I AM WRONG
shorter gears = more shifts
My mistake was thinking that you thought stock gearing was superior
On short US tracks I don't believe the shift count disparity is as great as it is at spa

which setup is better is determined by the track layout; sometimes stock is better than shorter and other times it's the other way round... all depends on the track that's why most people usually do the analysis with a few tracks in mind and figure out what r&p and gears to get... or just r&p alone...

I bought a .1 and am going to Thailand sitting up front. I would have preferred the 2 except for the centerlocks and keeping the Mrs. happy ensures I'm happy. For DE the performance difference is negligible to me- I'm stepping out of a 993. Any Gt3 is other worldy after having chased the damned things for years now.
Driving Spa is on my bucket list. More than any other track.
