Default creaky steering diagnosis?

Hi All,
Well after a fun, and blistering hot day at Laguna Seca today with Trackmasters and PCA SVR my steering seems to have developed a "creak" that sounds a little like I would imagine the timbers of an old sailing ship might sounds like as it rises and falls with the waves ... seriously!

seems worse when turning left, its difficult to locate the sounds origin but I think/hope its actually the steering column in the cabin and not somewhere down towards the steering rack etc ...

anyone got any thoughts on what could possibly be causing this?

TIA

- Larry

Hey Larry,

Sometimes steering creaks occur at the strut towers. These ones are easy to find too, check the torque of the 3 mounting bolts and the strut/shock nut on each side (these sometime loosen on their own, use some locktite if so). Maybe you will get lucky with a simple fix.

Cheers and good luck!

Larry I sometimes get that when I get gravel in the front springs from to much loop driving, if there's such thing as too much of any kind of driving! Jack it up and spray it with a hose.

Hey Larry,

It might be worth getting the wheel bearings checked just in case.

All the best,

GTS

Hey sailor, are you sure it's coming from the car and not from the driver? We are not getting any younger..

Let me have a look at the 997 TSBs when I get back. I think I saw one about steering wheel / dash creaks, while searching for something else.

I won't say check your power steering fluid level because it would be too obvious.

so the plot thickens, I moved the car this morning in the garage and while there is still "some" noise it has decreased very significantly ... which makes me wonder if it is temperature dependent???

Had the same problem , turned out to be from the upper struts , the metal bushing (ring) or I don't know what it's called was slightly bent and was not sitting properly.

My car has that same creak (sometimes), but always when the car is just pulling out of the driveway. After driving it a bit, the creak goes away.
